I went to Ace Cafe this weekend for a Passion Ford meet. When we arrived there was a Maclaren P1 there, or so we thought.

After looking around it I realsied that although it had a P1 front it did not have a P1 back end. It had VP106 prototype vehicle on the side. When we used the reg app to work out how it was registered it also came up "Maclaren prototype"!

At around 21:30 a recovery support vehicel turned up and a guy sat there with his laptop trying to get it started!!!

When we left at 22:30 they had left without the car tucked up under its custom cover probably for an unexpected overnight stay, prototype indeed!!

I tried googling and searching for this car. Its seems to not exist, very strange.

And the LCB collective saves the day again!!

I wonder why it was badged and labelled a prototype, maybe it was a prototype 570s from some time back, on a new plate.

Still a little fishy.

I work for a.n.other car manufacturer and it's quite common to build a prototype chassis underneath an existing car (the 570S) when in the early stages of development. It means you can drive and evaluate a new design without attracting too much attention.

I recently saw what looked like a Ferrari 458 but it was in fact an early prototype for La Ferrari...

...and on a more mundane note; LandRover built the first Freelander prototypes under a Maestro van body! Those cars spent 6-12 months in use on public roads.

There is a whole range of McLarens now so it is feesible that this is a mule for something which is coming along

I'd agree with Jeff that it's probably a development mule for something new. Sure I read somewhere that they'd been using a butchered Ultima as a mule to test the P1 motor at one point in it's early development.

Worked for Mercedes head office a while ago and I launched the AMG SLS. that was developed under the TVR body panels of all things in its early days. Apparently purchased about 15 in total
