Earth Leakage Q

Hello All Lectrik Experts;

Wife's tin-top keeps flattening its battery. Have had an initial look-over, but couldn't detect anything wrong.

So - how should I check for an earth leakage? Would welcome your guidance on this.

It may be a simple case of buying a new battery, but I'd like to establish if there is an earth leak somewhere, first.

Seems reasonable, never considered it but I'm surprised that the voltage is that high.

Notice how many times he blinks :O

Start by testing the battery. I would then use an ammeter , either a clamp on type or depending on type of car one with a shunt in series with the main battery lead . Then it's "just" a case of locating the cause of the problem. I've had alternators faulty causing the problem in the past, immobilisers, boot lights as well.i have seen testers to temporarily fit into fuse holders used that aren't too expensive.

If it has power fold mirrors unplug them, that was the first thing we used to check at Renault with power drains. The motors can jam leaving a slight drain on the electrics

Thank you for your replies, "Diamond of Doom"(?) - well, maybe where the electrics are concerned. The tip re motorised mirrors is worth remembering, although not applicable to our/her Modus. And the answer was - THE BATTERY !! Costly, but relatively simple remedy.

How long does it take for the battery to drain? When its parked up disconnect the alternator and see what happens.

Cheers

At that age (if it's the original battery) I'd assume it's the battery itself being knackered. As you say never a welcome expense, but equally not a difficult fix either.
