Any Toyota 4AGE fans out there? Tuning advice needed

Hi guys,

I have a 16v 4AGE big port on Weber 40s fitted to my Fury in standard form and knocking out 135BHP. I also have a spare engine (also big port) that's had the bottom end rebuilt and some head porting and I have a set of Jenvey throttle bodies sitting in the garage. I'm thinking of putting together a pokier powerplant whilst trying to keep a tight rein on spending (famous last words) so I'm looking for advice from anyone's who's done this already. BTW the intended usage is a mix of road and track day, gearbox is T9 close ratio long first, diff is 3.92.

I'd like to try and get around 170BHP and I'm thinking cams (which?), raise compression (pistons or skim?), lightened flywheel and ITBs. Does this sound reasonable? What am I missing (if anything)?

I've got to this assumption from reading around a bit online but I'd like to hear from anyone with experience of this sort of thing.

Cheers, Russ.

probably not what you want to hear but by the time you have dome that then you may as well have sold the two engines and bough the 20v version which comes with 45mm TBs and is designed to push out around 160hp all day without being stressed, easier and cheaper to replace if it goes bang.

if sticking with the 16v then don't forget that you will need a new ECU/engine loom to run the injection system and a rolling road session to set up, budget £1k for this.

Raw Engineering do 16v and 20v 4age tuning bits and have been fitting them to their Striker for AGEs (sorry for the pun).

Just a couple of thoughts to get things going.

Yeah I'm aware of the 20v option but I figured that seeing as I've got the engine and the ITBs already that I'd I'd do something with it. ECU, loom, HP pump, pipework and r/road tune are a given. If I could get it to around 170bhp without spending silly money then I might end up with a nice revvy "characterful" engine and as far as I'm aware at that spec the engine wouldn't be under a lot of stress?

I assume with the 20v route you'd be using a stock ECU and loom? So no dyno session needed.

With the porting, higher CR and ITB ypu are certainly shouting down the 20v route.

I would consider buying a set of 20v pistons and rods. Check that your crank is the right size and they should go in. All 4ages have interchangeable parts. Im planning on using thicker old rods and pistons to LOWER my CR for the supercharger build, if I ever get time.

160 from a stock 20v is bold. Most people complain about Toyotas optamistic power. I get 150bhp with omex ecu and VVTI working so I doubt its common to get more.

I am sure you have already found it but if not this is a must read site.

I would consider bolting a turbo on.

Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

I've had a read through Bill Sherwood's site, it seems to be a mecca for 4AGE tuning That's kinda where I got the idea I could go for something like 288 cams, a higher C/R and ITBs but otherwise stock parts and see some reasonable results. Any idea what kinda of compression ratio you get with 20v (blacktop?) pistons? I suppose a thinner head gasket would help too.

Would be interested to hear from anyone who's trodden this path already and what results they got.

P.s. Not looking to go forced induction, my last car was turbo so I'm looking for some N/A fun again.

The combustion chanber is a different shape so just putting the pistons in will acheive a different CR but the 20v BT is 12:1 IIRC.

I've had my big port head skimmed by 1mm recently to raise the compression ratio and hopefully make use of the HKS 264in /256 ex cams. Can't be sure what difference it has made because I haven't used it since and really need to get it mapped but the idle is better.

There was a thread here http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=192824 for a guy doing a nice build but no updates there for a while. It would be interesting to see what his chucked out after that work.

I think some of the figures that raw and possibly toyota used to quote are a bit pie In the sky, I've got a 16v with cams ( can remember duration but the towards the rally side of things) omex ignition and jenvey ITB's. When these were purchased from raw they thought id be getting about 180 bhp, in reality I've got 152bhp at Northampton motorsport and I don't really make any power till 5000rpm....
Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining and I've got a great little engine, but you'll be spending big money to get more with out spending thousands... When I had my car at rogue motorsport (mr2 specialists) they were surprised that I even had 152 bhp normally aspirated!
