Kawasaki ZZR1400 - heavy breathing of oil
Running a ZZR1400 engine in an MK Indy. Have an AB Performance sump and oil cooler.
Crankcase breather pipe goes into 1 Litre Oil Catch tank, which has a breather filter and a drain line at the bottom. No line back into the engine
as the catch tank oil will be contaminated with condensation.
Problem I'm having is that the ZZR Engine breathes very heavily. If I fill the engine with 6 Litres of oil - to the middle of the sight glass,
a track session will easily fill the catch tank and even worse it blows through the breather filter and out into the engine - then the car and
everywhere...
Is anyone else running a ZZR 1400 engine? How did you resolve the heavy breathing?

I don't rememebr it needing 6 litres of oil for the engine, even with oil cooler that a lot of oil, when np normally they run around 3.5 litres
of oil, I know you have an oil cooler but I had the same set up on mine with an 4 qrt accusump and only ran around 6 litres, no brother issues it
sounds like overfill,? Perhaps run it until it stops breathing oil to find its level and go from there? Unless someone knows different

ZZR14000 capacity is 4 litres, more when the AB Sump added.
Oil cooler was installed by a specialist bike engined car engineer - I won't name them on this forum until after I have spoken to them. So they
filled the oil as part of the service.
Half a dozen laps of Donington Park and the litre catch tank was full, and blowing through the breather filter into engine compartment - messy.
Oil is now 1/3 way up sight glass. I think I will wait until it has stopped filling the catch tank, then change it and measure what comes out. That
should give me the working level going forward.
It does seem to breathe quite hard though.

Might be worth doing a leakdown test to see what the ring sealing is like. If it's breathing that hard there may be a problem in this area.

Ive had this engine in my MK for the last 8yrs....great engine but one of things it does'nt like is too much oil!
i've had several conflicting views by "experts" to what is the correct amount to put in.
Two trackdays come to mind that highlighted this problem (Croft and Blyton) both fast high revs tracks and both occasions i put more oil than usual in
(due to expert advice lol) result oil decorated engine bay....
Right... the correct level in my opinion (based on experience) :- engine cold, not running, on level glass gauge there are 2 lines on bottom, the oil
level needs to be 3-5mm above second line.

Good to hear from someone running the same engine.
Are you running a baffled sump and an oil cooler? Have you got a catch tank? Does your engine always breather heavily and spray oil?

Yes i have got an AB performance baffled sump and an oil cooler next to radiator, has a 1/2 litre catch tank which never has to be emptied ...engine
runs fine no overheating problems. in fact on cooler days it runs a bit on cold side.
The only time as i mentioned having any trouble is when i put too much oil in!
Try at the level i said and (unless the engine is worn) it should run ok
