have uploaded pic to photo archive but can,t seem to get them across to profile
tried to cut and paste ??????????????
where am i going wrong, even tried from work on different comp

Right click on the image and save as... upload to photo archive and repeat the process you did to get the original...

ive tried that but all i get is the little red x
plus i tried to use the down sized pic
from above and that didnt work
so how did mango do it for me
he wrote out a link and it popped up
i tried it and guess what.......... zip

You get the adress by opening the pic in your archive, right click, properties. Highlight the web adress of the pic. Press ctrl+c (copy) then paste(ctrl+v) the adress into your profile/avatar url thingy.

all photos in the archive must have a unique name (if you look at the urls they don't have any 'owner' information).

So someone has already used avatar.jpg

In fact it looks like this:
