Hey guys - who sells chassis?

Hey guys!

I have been contemplating building one for many years and a friend has just offered me his mx5 very cheap as a donor car, but can anyone point me in the direction of someone who can build a chassis?

Mechanics im fine with, but I wouldn't trust my welding on a chassis!

Thanks guys, where is the NMR kit priced?

The aries kit looks good, though the pricing page looks a little confusing for a newbie - am I right in saying the starter kit for the independent rear suspension kit (which I would need with my mx donor) is £1400?

That looks to include aly bodywork too?

Is there anywhere else to look? I remember a member made them up a few years ago?

Need to make sure I buy right because of using an mx

Cheers!

If you can wait just over a month you can see all the chassis in person at Stoneleigh...

I would certainly look at those manufacturers who produce an MX5 specific kit. It wouldn't take much effort to update a Sierra chassis to host an MX5 rear end but it would be almost impossible if you can't weld.

id definitely be looking at an mx5 kit - not worth me trying to modify a sierra based chassis.

Im kicking myself as I was offered a chassis a year ago for £300 - always the way!

Kit prices are very hard to compare as nobody really does a "like for like" price list. So check exactly what they include before deciding that one kit seems way more than another.

MNR, Westfield, Roadrunner and Aries all do kits specifically for the mx5. I think Talon make a locost chassis, but not sure? MNR kit looks very good and was what I was looking at before a relatively inexpensive unstarted MK came my way, can't comment on others.

Yer, for a tad over £1400, you'll get the chassis, front and rear wishbones, bushes and tubes,(think it includes all nuts and bolts) and the alloy panels. Sides, tunnel, panel behind the seats, and rear tub panel.
That's what I got with mine. Everything fitted together really well,( no drilling the holes out after it had been powder coated) .really pleased with it, and the help from Steve was 1st class.

While Phil (Talon) is a sound guy and is willing to do whatever he can to support his customers, I'm afraid I can't recommend him as a reliable source of kit. You'll find several threads on the Haynes forum where he has actually posted apologies and explanations as to why he leaves so many customers high and dry. From memory it's a combination of health issues and trouble with suppliers. I would estimate I lost at least a couple of months on my project because he was unable to supply what I ordered.

I've got absolutely no issue with his workmanship (he is extremely talented to even come up with some of the stuff he makes), and if he didn't have external issues I would recommend him in a heartbeat. But if you're looking to get major components from him, there is a good chance you will have a frustrating time of it.

Speak to Simon at Westfield, I bought my MX5 kit as they were doing £1000 off the list price, you might be able to get the same deal still?

Thanks

Shaun

Thanks again guys, really helpful info!

looking at the kits, it seems to be the wishbones that will need to be purchased (if I end up buying a bare chassis) - will the prop fit or does that need to be modified?

Anything else on the car that will need a tweak? Just trying to roughly get an idea of what will be need to purchased, the mx5 I have is pretty much complete bar spri gs and shockers, so will have a pretty much complete car to use

2 year bump!

Well after another child, 2 job moves and a house move I'm go finally considering another build!

For a low budget are the people you guys kindly suggested above still best for chassis? Or is there any new players?

Thank you!
