Tin Top Insurance gone up 50%

I am having mild financial difficulties this year (house needs rewiring, boilers broke girlfriend unemployed) and the one thing I though I might save some cash is my car insurance. Last year I paid £504 with 4 years no claims on my GT TDI Golf. Now with 5 years no claims my renewal is £1063. Phone them and they said all insurance has gone up. I compared the meerkat and did the swiftcover, directline, tesco admiral thing and the best I can get is £650. Can someone explain this................?

Have you tried our sponsor, 2gether? (Their link is on the top of the Insurance section)

I'm not saying that they will be any cheaper, but it's worth a phone call to find out.

Had similar problem a week or two ago, then 'RSA echoice' popped up as a new insurance provider and was by faaar the cheapest (still £50 more than last year though ).
Worth a look if you havn't seen them already.

Mine hasn't gone up or down as I haven't actually insured my own car before, but I thought that £1k for a 20 year old with 0 ncb on a mid engined sports car was pretty good myself.

Admiral and elephant come up at half the price of any other insurer (including specialists) for me.

I'm paying about £10 more than last year (tesco) - but I had to call them up and threaten to take my buissnes elsewhere again

years ago I must have asked the AA for a price (never had a policy with them) so this year they sent me a junk letter 'just letting me know' how much they'd charge me now based on my old details....
I sold that car in 2003 and I guess they think I'm still a student, but they have worked out that I'll have 10 years NCD
and based on that they want £440 on a 1979 1.1 fiesta third party only and thats a group 3 car if I remember right

I only pay £420 on a 2001 1.8 petrol Focus (group 6) with protected fully comp. 4 other drivers (3 younger than me) !!

Had the same issue too - not crazy increase like yourself but an increase none the less. On recommendations from here I used SwiftCover. As cheap as 2Gether and all done on line too. They honoured my no claims with no quibble too.

Not had to use them yet but very happy so far - mainly with the price!

I have slightly more no claims than you but a similar car - 130 Tdi Sport Passat, 53 Reg. I'm paying less than a third of the 1k you've quoted.

Yeh we got stung too with my gilfriends insurance, She has used the same local broker for the last 10 years which she has never argued with. But like you we are trying to save money due to me not working so this time i bothered to shop around. Using the gocompair website i not only managed to half the renewal qoute but also go it cheaper than last year.

Last year with swinton (thru broker) was £400
renewal with swinton was £680
gocompair with Admiral was £305

All on a 1.4 'T' plate puma worth less than £1000, used for her mobile job and also me as a second driver.

As we are both lazy with shopping around, it means we can save alot at the moment as my house insurance is 1\3 cheaper too due to a new company qoute. I understand i have wasted money over the last 10 years not doing this but now i need to save money it comes as a nice suprise.

All i need to do now is combine my gas and elecy suppliers, change to direct debits and i should save some more hopefully allowing me to keep the kitcar on the raod this year.

Try a few more places, also try adding your wife/gf/dad to the policy as it may make it cheaper.

Sorry about my spelling, im an engineer and only work in numbers.

Yeah, insurance for my daily went from £500 to £1300 on renewal with 11 years NCB. Got it back down to £690 with shopping around but couldn't get it any lower than that.

Pedantic I know but your renewal is actually 189% of what you used to pay.

Judging by the driving I saw this morning I can believe it unfortunately. I saw an accident where damage was involved and both parties drove off?? What does that tell you about the number of uninsured drivers which we are all paying for?

This morning I filled in an online compare cover form for the 17 year old lad at work, to try and find a car to choose that was cheap on insurance.

Went onto ebay, found a P reg Polo 1L for £200 and entered the details into form, along with his address/personal etc (very nice crime free area)

Cheapest quote was £5999, dearest quote over £16,000

That is bloody diegraceful...

This week I have been explaining the maths to Direct Line that it is in fact cheaper not bothering with insurance, and to replace the car AND take the fine if/when I get caught.

Strangely enough ours never goes down either, despite the accident vanishing last renewal and my points vanishing for this one. I vote we demand that these insurers publish their criteria so we know they're not just getting a random number generator in
