Extra support for Trailing arm brackets
Hello people,
a friend of mine in Athens decided to add a
second support square tube to tubes M1
and M2 to give a stronger supporting position for the U brackets.
I would like to mention that the brackets he
is using are wider than the "book" size. I
have manufactered the regular size
brackets matching "book" dimensions.
Do you think it is wise to follow that
practice or not?

I made mine out of 50mm box section, using one piece for the entire bracket. Hasn't cracked after 12000 miles.

A pit pointless it may actually be weaker than the book version.
If you want gain stiffness at the point the best way is as one or two of us have done combine both trailing arm brackets into one bracket. that runs
the full height of M2. You can also use a thicker in fill panel.

I made mine a single bracket that is fully adjustable (made from 50 X 50 X 2,5 mm)
Next time round I will do away with M1 & 2 completely as I think the bracket is strong enough to stand on its own and I can then gain onother 35
mm in trailing arm length which is a good thing.

hey trident, how come the arrangement shown could be weaker??
some good ideas on this thread though
im going with the overlapped 1" bar bent over top of both outer brackets, then fixed to infill and upright and drilled...?!

hey hustler - any chance of finding out the size of those bushes and bush tubes? looks like he's using bushes with an innner sleeve - I'm
just about to fabricate the trailing arms but a bit stuck on measurements - thx

I made mine from 50mm RHS as well. The standard design having the barckets hanging off a bit of 25mm RHS is woefully inadeqate IMO.

Hmm There are a LOT of Locost (and Clone) cars built like it, and some even raced. If it was that inadequate, there would have been more accidents,
and more warnings on this site about it.
Whilst I do agree it seems a bit weak, I am not sure its that big a problem, or indeed even a problem at all.
When I do a scratch build (probably my next project) I will be strengthening the bracketry.
Mind you , me and my son weigh in at 40+ stone, so there is a lot more stress involved with my car

Thank you all for the replies, the pictures and
the info you posted. I really liked that
adjustable brackets.
I decided to go on by the book and not add anything more.

Plenty of people have had the brackets crack using the standard unsupported separate brackets design. There was a a fairly big thread about this
quite a long time ago, but might be in the archives still.
