Making your own VIN
Hi GUys,
Am i right in thinking that you can invent your own VIN number and you don't need to speak to the DVLA about it until you come to road register
the car?

I would strongly suggest you apply for a VIN from the DVLA. It can save time in the long run.
May even be possible to have you car inspected if a good way along before IVA.

you need to know that the number is valid, and not already used on another car... so sort or, but you really should call DVLA and check with them. i
think certain letters aren't allowed, eg 1 and I can look the same, so i think I isn't allowed.
save the hassle and call them first

I sent a nice polite letter to my local DVLA office proposing a VIN, and asking them whether it was OK (it was part of my letter asking for the SVA
forms).
I got a letter back saying that it was OK (which I kept until the car was registered, as evidence!)

Maybe I'll just ask them for a VIN. Can't say I'm too bothered about the actual number...!

Your chassis supplier might be able to issue you with a VIN for their chassis.
Luego does (or did).
No "o" Oh's and no "i" Eyes. As they can be confused with Zero and One's.
ie you put in a letter "o" in your vin and they will show it as a Zero.
Get one from the DVLA or your kit manufacturer (if they have them) and you wont be wrong.
Just mt 2d's worth

I made mine up and asked the dvla if it was ok, and was when I was in the uk, however when importing it to Oz it would have been much easier if
I'd just asked them for one as mine wasn't in the international recognized format and caused a mass paper trail.

Hi
Just phoned DVLA Brighton, they said to bring the car for inspection & they will issue
A Vin No , booked an appointment Then Trailered the car down, they had a look
checked the engine no and gave us a VIN only had to wait around 30 mins.
Brighton were most helpful and also when we went for the registration all done in one visit.
Very good service, unlike some of the horror story's on here.
As we are only up the road from you , Brighton will be your office.

I made mine up and had no problems.
My memory fails me now but there was a document doing the rounds on here that explained the criteria for a valid vin number i.e. number of characters
and restrictions etc. I followed those rules without a single issue.
