Blackbird goes bang, blade doesnt

Seriously, there must have been more 'bird engine failures in BECs than all other popular engines put together. It always fails in the same place, the 3rd big-end or main bearing ISTR, and has even failed when dry sumped.

If I was building a BEC now I would go for an R1 engine which gives similar power to a 'bird but in a lighter package and thus far proved reliable in a BEC. Failing that, the blade is a great engine, light, very strong and lots of em around, and plenty powerful enough for a BEC.
