Clutch exploded, metal in oil - advice needed
Hi folks,
I've manage to destroy the clutch basket in my zx12r pulling out of a junction yesterday and now I have metallic debris in the oil.
I'm looking for a bit of advice with what to do from here. I'm on the hunt for a new engine and a billet clutch basket which are both
proving difficult to find.
I'm going to look at flushing and cleaning out the contaminated engine so I'm looking for advice on how to do this, methods, products to
use etc
I've never done any real internal engine work and it's quite daunting but I'll give it a go if I feel confident.

Sorry to hear that, experience suggests that it is not easy to clear out all the debris and that it is critical to do a complete strip and flush.

Ah S**t happens mate, but thanks anyways
yeah i was thinking that. I have a friend who can strip and rebuild bike engines in hes sleep but hes unavailable for over a month, so dropping
another lump in it for the time being seems the best idea.

Is the basket a weak point on the ZX12?
Or did you give it loads of abuse with sticky tyres?

Tell me about it bud.
I wouldn't call it abuse, I was trying to pull out of a junction pretty hard and it just popped
Road tyres and an LSD.
I gave my old zx9 way more than that with no issues but yeah I've read the clutch basket on the 12 is made of chocolate (wish I'd known
that before fitting it lol)

Oh dear.
My m8 gives his MK some stick from standing starts with semi slicks and it spins up lovely !

Spoken with a couple of bike engines guys today including my local Kawasaki mechanic who is fairly confident that I won't have caused any
lasting damage (he's seen this a couple of times) and has recommended I physically clean all traces of debris from the bottom of the engine,
sump and strainer then flush out the engine a couple of times.
So how do I flush it? replace the oil and filter run it for a few minutes then repeat a few times or would I use actual flush additive? Is there any
chemicals I can use to help was and flakes away?
I might have a lead on a billet basket but it's a 6 week turn around so I've plenty of time

Sounds nasty, you need to make sure the oil hasnt carried any bits through the gallerys up the cams and everywhere..
Nobody make a billet basket to beef it up? Thinking the good old USA here..
Good excuse to totally strip it and put some forged pistons in with a turbo....

shouldn't the filter have caught any debris from traveling round the engine?
Yeah there a few places in America who make billet baskets, ive emailed them all today to hopefully ill get somewhere

Update - ive managed to source a replacement OEM clutch basket to run while i wait the 6 weeks for a billet basket from the USA
im going to clean the engine via the sump and inspect the top end for any traces of debris, if i feel happy with that im going to install magnetic
traps, flush the engine 3 times then re-inspect the oil, sump, and filter which will hopefully be clean.
fingers crossed!

Isn't the sump basket aluminium and non magnetic?

There's all sorts or debris from casings, basket, plates and steels, clutch actuator, gear teeth etc
