The SVA DAY, JGG

Well, Monday arrived. Alarm set for 04:30 and it duly went off. Must admit I had slept better. So I duly had some breakky and packed for what I thought suitable. My build up file, with all my purchase receipts. A tool kit, consisting of a few sockets, pliers, screw drivers, allen keys, etc. A bag of what covers, cable ties, rubber trim, dremmel and emery tape. I then made a flask of coffee and some sarni's and loaded the car. Drove the car out of the garage, flicked the lock over on the garage door and closed it.

First major problem of the day, I am now LOCKED out of the house with no keys to get in.

God bless my understanding wife who rescues me after I ring the door bell.

So at 06:00 I set off for Nottingham SVA centre.
Just as I arrived at the station I started to get a few spots of rain on my visor.
and at 08:05hrs (after getting lost for 20 minutes, I missed a left turn) I arrived at the Centre (before a lot of the staff)
Before SVA
Before SVA

At about 08:30 the test gets under way.

Item 1
So you were all right about the foam insulation, it fails because it goes soggy and fall apart.

Item 2
I have a sharp edge to the rear of my Aerocap fuel filler, although it is recessed, I left it exposed to the rear so that any fuel spilt around it would run off to the rear rather linger over my boot cover.

Item 3
The rivnuts that came through from the passenger side front bulkhead constitute a sharp edge.

Item 4
My adapted wide reflectors below the rear lights have sharp edges.

Item 5
CO reading high (4.6 I think it was. no wonder it seemed to use a lot of fuel getting there, about 2 gallons for 70 miles approx).

Item 5
Head lamp aims.

The one that I was really panicking over was the speedo reading. This he said was abosutely spot on. 30 @ 30, 40 @ 40, 50 @ 50, 70 @ 70. so I have no margin for error.

Self centering was fine, although I have obviously built a lardy version for it weighs in at GVW 1250kg.
Braking performance was spot on. The fronts locking up well in advance of the rears. with only a 15% front imballance.

So that was about it. Over all a FAIL.

However he had a quick twist and pull on the head lights ( checking security of mounting ) and low and behold the were magically aligned.

A couple of quick turns with the allen key and that bought the emissions down to 1.7%.

About another 20 minutes of throwing more rubber wear at the car ( a length of heater hose cut along its length and then cable tied is Ok for a pass where I had the foam insulator. A nut cover split and with a strategic hole in the dome is ok for the bottom threads of the headlamp mounting where the cable comes out of it. Some 5mm id fuel hose is ok for the rivnuts and some rubber edge trim lipped under and up the edge of the Aerocap is also OK.

The end result was that at 10:57 hrs I was presented with a MAC certificate.
After SVA
After SVA

This certificate I duly secreted into my inside coat pocket for safe and secure keeping.

On the way back home it rained. As soon as I got in the first thing that I did was to put the heating on and DRY out the Certificate. Thankfully it has only run a little bit on the reverse.

However despite the poor weather on the way back,................the road back was the reverse of the way there, nice and twisty. A delight to drive.

Congratulations!

Although I do believe that you've mis-interpreted the GVW - I can't imagine that you're far off a wet weight of 600kg.

Well done!

David

Oh - and don't forget to scan your MAC, as you won't see it again once you've registered the car.

Well done!

It sounds a bit like my SVA a few weeks ago, a fail then a pass all in the same morning.

It's a great feeling isn't it! You'll have a big grin on your face for a few days yet.

I shall only be leading by virtue of the fact that having got in excess of 30mpg today coupled with an enormous 12 gallon tank, I will be waiting for every one out on the road.
