track days
craig5 - 19/6/15 at 01:00 PM

just bought a stm r1 and at moment the et is 0 as was used for hill climbs so anyone got any info what my best standard set would suit track days as a base to start with and what are regarded as best tyres

bi22le - 19/6/15 at 01:06 PM

A048 are commonly considered the best semi cut slick. They are pricey though. R888 are a little cheaper.

If you are considering changing your wheels then 15" will give you more tyre options.

13" are lighter.

ET generally seem all over the place. I guess the wider the track the better.

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 01:47 PM

they dont do the ao48 in 13's though

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 01:52 PM

have 13 7 minilights at moment but the tyre size is 215 50 13 so can i change this as toyo dont make that size

Karl H - 19/6/15 at 02:42 PM

They do 888s in 225/45 R13 I'm no expert but is that close enough?

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 03:02 PM

god know i just know how to drive i have spare set of alloys with 185 55 13 with avon zzr's on them can these go straight on car i have no idea haha

daniel mason - 19/6/15 at 05:08 PM

Does the car have a speedo Craig? If so where is the pickup?
If you could keep the tyre size the same the speedo should work the same.
If you keep these tyres for road use then you know it's accurate. For track work bolt some slicks on mate!

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 05:19 PM

The speedo not working it has sensor that looks too far away from wheel mayb caûse he they were running et0 for hill climbs also has the piece of metal on alloys as the pick up

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 05:22 PM

Was also given a 2nd set of alloys with 185 55 13 Avon zzr on have some receipts and looks like they are 13x6 the alloys

daniel mason - 19/6/15 at 05:53 PM

The pickup would generally not be on the wheel itself!

Err, yes they do.

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 06:12 PM

where should it be poss rear drive shafts?

daniel mason - 19/6/15 at 06:33 PM

Anywhere you can get a mounting point for the sensor really

just spoke to phil and he said pick up always been on alloys and he originally had it on the 13 6 alloys but he removed and stuck in on the 13 7 now but it doesnt work

daniel mason - 19/6/15 at 07:42 PM

It's probably a spacing issue due to different width wheels and offsets. Which is why It would ge better to be relocated somewhere else which doesn't alter when wheels are swapped!
If your not too bothered about it,run the 6" rims on the road so th speed works and put some slicks on the 7" rims for track or competition use where you don't need a speedo

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 07:58 PM

there is no blue light from sensor which it needs im told

A048 are not the best semi-slick and 13" will give you the best choice of 1b tyres.

He got the 13" are lighter bit right.

Avon ZZR, ZZS or CR500, Toyo R888R or R888 are all good tyres. As you have ZZRs I'd give those a go. They do ZZRs in 215/50 13 as well. Make sure you are not using A24 compound ZZRs are they will overheat very quickly (typically used in Sprints & Hillclimbs).

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 08:21 PM

theres not much life in them anyway was going to try the avon zzs

jeffw - 19/6/15 at 08:44 PM

ZZS looks like a good compromise.

daniel mason - 19/6/15 at 08:47 PM

My favourite of all the road tyres is the kumho v70/v700 but as JW says these can overheat in next to no time in the softest hillclimb compounds!
This is my take on things;
For road use I'd run the 6" wheels. With a 185/60/13 fr - 205/60/13 rear
With your spare set of 7" rims
If track days are your thing I'd opt for a good set of circuit slicks (these are very cheap to buy used)
If hillclimbing/sprinting in a roadgoing class I'd go for the kumho v70a In super soft compound
If hillclimbing/sprinting in non roadgoing just go Avon a15 slicks (you will have mega fun in these)

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 08:48 PM

will go with them

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 08:50 PM

daniel will be just light road use and id say few track day days a year at either oulton or ty croes

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 08:53 PM

diff gona be replaced asap as been out in car today and way to short gona try a 3.6 but my biggest issue at moment is the koso dash not so much the speedo but the revs as will be hitting limiter all the time as it is at moment

daniel mason - 19/6/15 at 09:08 PM

Dunlop do a good track slick, I used to run on my first radical. They can be had very cheap.
The diff was always going to be the issue but a 3.38 would be great for road and both those circuits. With a 3.62 you'll be bouncing off the limiter before old hall and she'll oils at o/p and all the way from church to rocket on the island!
The 3.62 should be great for hillclimbs, short sprints and even some circuit sprints like blyton park.

craig5 - 19/6/15 at 09:15 PM

not saw any lsd 3.38
