Getting into racing
CrowmarshGibbon - 2/3/17 at 09:26 PM

Hi!

I'm considering building and racing a Locost but am concerned that it may be a ball-ache to find the appropriate engine. Am I right in thinking that the racing is done using Locosts built as per Ron Champion's book and not the later book by Chris Gibbs?

Any advice for someone starting out would be appreciated!

If you're thinking about building a race car, always start by reading the rule book for the class you're planning to compet in.

The rules for the 750MC Locost Championship are here

The rules for the engine are under Section 5.7.

Have read the regs but maybe the question I'm asking is how easy is it to source a Ford X flow 1300 engine given that Escorts and Cortinas are not that easy to find these days? (At an affordable price that is!)

There are other classes to race in, which will use more common engines.

There are a fair few crossflows out there but I would be inclined to buy a race proven complete car, best way to ensure the bugs are ironed out and it's compliant for the series

As above., maybe consider buying 2nd hand race car. Last thing you wanna do is spend thousands of pounds and hundreds of man hours on building it only to bin it in your first few races.

Worth noting the link above isnt a race car or compliant with the locost race series
