750mc sports specials

Hi guys, hoping for some advice if thats okay?

Looking to build up a car for 750mc sports specials for 2016.

It will be a locost car running hopefully a Zetec 1.8 as for the moment Duratec 2.0 with jenveys just a little too pricey.
Had a chat with the guys and Nigel at Castle Combe last weekend and think this is the series for me.

As luck would have it saw this listing for a new zetec on eBay and wondered if this engine would be suitable, which of the cams listed in the regulations would be the best choice, should i look for a type 9 or MT75, what else should i look at as concerns setup, alteration, fueling, inlet, carbs etc.

Looking for any other helpful advice that may help me not too make too may costly mistakes whilst building this as budget has said she'll kill me if it gets out of hand...

Would anyone have a definitive answer on this engine...

cheers
Phil

I have a 1800 Zetec Procomp LA Gold I run in Sports Specials.
Not built by me but by Procomp.

If you want your dampers correctly valved and the handling spot on, go to Procomp.
http://www.procomp.co.uk/

A good series to be in and 1800 is competitive
I think it has been £245 for most double headers this year

Next one is at Mallory 27th September. Come and say hello, car #28

For what is legal and what is not, see the link below to the 2015 reg's

Thanks for the info Jack, will be taking the car to Procomp for a setup for sure.
Reading the regs it gives certain codes for the 1.8, trying to establish if the eBay one is allowed. Reading the regs it would seem it can be blueprinted and balanced but no modifications.
Which gearbox would be better?
We'll be at Mallory so will definitely come over and say hello

Thanks
Phil

It is not just gearbox.

The ratios of the gearbox and the diff' have to be right.

you could fit MT75, very wide.
Type 9
Bullit 4 speed...

...... and so on and so on

Whatever you do, if the budget allows, buy quality, it lasts longer.

Well I've got a 3.3, 3.6, 3.9 and 4.1 diff plus an mt75 and a type 9 box already and the chassis will accept the mt75 already. I know there's not as much choice of hearing with the mt75 but it is a bit lighter. Reading the regs I think I can fit lsd and do quite a few alterations but no sequential?
I'm hoping to IVA the car as road going then use it for racing plus the occasional road trip, sprint and hillclimb.
Biggest expense will be extinguishers, clothing, and associated stuff.

Was hoping engine I'm looking at would be suitable as can do most spanner work myself but not fancying a 100k used engine to start with as will prob spend more stripping and rebuilding than I can buy the eBay one for.

Any advice on which diff to use and what LSD people find good and reliable would be much appreciated also.

I have the skills to build but not the race knowledge of what parts to choose.

Chassis should be completed by the weekend and looking to get cracking on getting it together....

Next season will be upon us before I know it. Little bit excited, but realistic in knowing that the hard work starts now bolting everything together and shaking it down and fettling.

Cheers
Phil

Obviously the higher the number the diff the more punch you will get off the line but may restrict the top speed.

LSD. I don't think the 1800 class are allowed a LSD, could be wrong.

No sequential box.

Extinguishers are dead cheap, under £100 including all the plumbing
V2 Helmets do a great lid for £225 with FHR clips fitted.
You will need a FHR for 2016
Boots from £50 from PlaysKool Motorsport
http://www.plays-kool.co.uk/acatalog/Racelidz-Nomex-Raceboots.html
Gloves £40, same place
http://www.plays-kool.co.uk/acatalog/Racelidz-Nomex-Gloves.html

Overalls cane be had from around £225 new but providing you have bought a pair in date ebay could be the place.
To keep to a budget I have in the last 15 years nor bought brand new overalls.
Current in date code for boots, gloves and overalls is 8856-2000

If you do not have a race licence, start the application process now.

Phil,

I can see the engine number in the last photo on the ebay advert, but I cant make them out.

Exhaust side of the engine, on the web that bolts to the bell housing.
Ask them for a close up photo of this, should give you what you need.

May be an idea to contact Giles at 750mc and ask for guidance.

I have a feeling that this engine may not be allowed.
If I remember correctly, Procomp told me that Black Tops are not allowed.

The ebay engine is a black top.

IM your email address to me and I will send you some more info
