yes you need a speedo.

:O)

and you cant rely on a GPS system due to time to locate.

sorry mate.

cant be too hard to "pop" back in the gearbox.

quote yes you need a speedo.

My MOT tester did not use the rollers to check my speedometer and another tester I know says he regularly MOTs a Morris 1000 that has the same mileage each year because the speedometer is broken.

Worth checking I would have thought.

I know that for bike MOT you dont need one, and Im pretty sure that for car MOT you also dont need one

however under C&U regs you have to have one

I cant find any reference to a speedometer test or inspection in the manual, so if it doesnt say you have to have one, then you dont

but worth a phone call to the tester anyway

edit: must learn to type faster and then I wont look like a wally posting the same as the person above LOL

heavy is good, heavy is reliable, and if it breaks, hit them with it

if i'm not mistaken, an MOT is not actually allowed to drive the car per se so therefore cannot test the speedo.
Only DVLA can do that.

I could be wrong of course

Time for a change!

It is not a testable item but is a requirement.
IE you won't be failed on it but are likely to get an advisory.

The fact advisories are recorded in a central data base is starting to cause me concern --- someday insurance companies and "the traffic" are going to start to use the info.

Of course you could always take the car to a certain well known fastfit outfit in my experience they only fail cars on stuff they can sell or fix.

Brakes can still be tested on the road with a Tapley meter under some circumstances.

As an m.o.t tester myself i can confirm that a speedo is not a testable item there for it makes no difference if it works or not or even dosnt have one at all. Only drive a short distance up the road if it is a vehicle that cant be roller brake tested i,e 4X4.

Hope that helps

Thanks all guys.

Passed today with no advisories without the speedo being tested.

Which is good because it appear that its not just a simple clip back on job as the drive rod between the 90deg vdo takeoff piece and the type9 box has snapped off in the box. yay.
