Emissions check before IVA

This is probably a stupid question but I am taking the Indy to a friendly garage to have the emissions checked on Monday.

It is a 1996 ZX9 B4 engine on carbs and I have fitted a CAT to the exhaust (from a BMW Mini Cooper).

Having done a search I understand the testing limits for a post 95 pre 2002 non car specific test are:

Fast Idle: 2500rpm-3000rpm CO <=0.3%
Idle: 450-1500rpm CO <=0.5%

It also mention HC <=200ppm and a Lambda of between 0.97 and 1.03 but only in the post 02 section.

Obviously I have no lambda as its on carbs so can someone just clarify exactly what I should get tested and the readings I need to see?

I know I need to get the CAT nice and hot first.

Thanks !

Rich

Get them to do a "BETS" test. It's the standard fallback test for MOT on post 'cat cars and is the same requirement as IVA.

You don't have a lambda sensor, but don't confuse this with the lambda refered to in the test which is a calculated figure from the gas sample and is done by the test machine. Lambda 1 equaling 14.7:1 fuel:air ratio

OK so just returned from my local friendly garage who tested the car. I got it well up to 70 degrees oil temp and ran it for ages at 4-5k rpm to get the exhaust hot. Maybe not hot enough as the cat is way down the exhaust.

The results were not encouraging (neither was the tester who repeatedly said "you'll never get that past on carbs mate"

He did 2 tests . Sadly I was sat in the car on the trailer holding the revs at 3500 rpm and so could not see what was going on till they had printed the 2 sheets. So these could be the wrong way round but I was told these were this way.

At idle

Limit Actual
0.3 1.823 CO % vol
200 2632 HC ppm
0.97-1.03 1.211 Lambda

Fast idle

Limit Actual
0.3 1.690 CO % Vol
200 1498 HC ppm
0.97-1.03 1.098 Lambda

So way off the mark. The carbs on my zx9 have etching to say they were modified by PRP in Lincoln. I think it says the jet sizes but can't see at present for my airbox. Is it possible the jets are fueling it so much I won't be able to get the levels down?

Any advice would be great as I am ready for IVA but now a bit stumped. Is the cat working or does it need to be red hot.

It was all a bit rushed so I couldn't try again today.

Help !

Rich
