Good Fail at Nottingham

Phew, glad that's over - been bricking it for days.
Had my IVA at Nottingham this morning. Chap called Martin did the test - top bloke.

Fail points are:

> Brake Warning Light Symbol itself needs to light up rather than having a light next to the symbol - Doh!, but easy to fix.
> Obligatory Exterior Projections Issues - Nothing major, just a few more bits of trim etc to attach. Should get most of this done this afternoon.
> Side repeater locations - I tried so hard to get these right oh well. Martin was very helpful in working out an alternative place for them
> Rear Fog lamp tell-tail comes on when you turn switch on, even if fog light itself is off (i.e. when main lights are off). Again - Doh!

And then the biggy:

> Emissions - Lambda is too high (1.180). I didn't expect this as I'm using an untuned engine with the OEM ECU. I'll start another thread for this one.

So, all in all, I'm pretty happy. Provided I can sort the emissions, I should be good to go for the re-test soon.

Had to drive 22 miles to the test centre. No serious issues with the car except it wasn't charging the battery - but I think I know why.
A real hoot to drive and seems very quick. I was a little careful and rationed out the beans, but I'm happy with what I see

I can relax a little now.

Cheers,
Bill

Well done chap. definitely a good fail

I just hope I have (if any) as few problems on my test

Soon be on the road then?

JB

BTW, does your brake warning work off the reservoir or on a test switch? I am relying on mine working when you take the lid off the M/C to indicate low fluid, or when you put the handbrake on.

Well done.

The nice thing is that you are allowed to drive to a place to get the faults sorted out. That means numberplate-less blasts to a 'local-ish' garage. It feels properly naughty.

1.18 is an AFR of 17.4, which sounds very lean (surprising it would idle at that). Is it running smoothly? If it is then maybe its an exhaust leak (extra air in there). A 4 gas analyser (via the NOx) will tell you whether it is running lean, or getting extra air in the exhaust (time for a blast to the friendly garage, arranged before hand of course).

On mine, there's a switch on top of the reservoir cap - standard sierra one.

Thanks for that - I'll certainly be popping to the local garage to see. As for idle, it seems fine - all nice a smooth. Exhaust manifold gasket perhaps? The lambda sensor is in the outlet from the Turbo, so there is little exhaust system before it?

Check for any air leak on the exhaust. That will give a high lambda. Afriendly MOT station should be able to do a check if you find and cure a leak (and you can drive it there as long as you book it in for "repair" now it's failed IVA)

All the rest... Doh! But a good fail all the same.

Well, fail points all sorted now. Emissions turned out to be a leaking exhaust system as mentioned - I've just come back from the local garage with a perfect Lambda score of 1.00

IVA re-test booked for Thursday 5th - wish me luck

Any chance of the explaining the wisdom of the chap at Nottingham regarding the location of the side repeaters, this is one of my fail points and I have reposition them - hopefully this weekend. If there is a decent post I have missed, just point me there.

For some reason I cannot get my head round this. Am I right in thinking that they need to be seen (at minimum) 5 degrees outboard from the rear and at an angle of 5 degrees from horizontal?

I intend to mount them at on the cycle wings about 400mm from the ground.

Do you mind sharing your wisdom, do you have any photo of before and after repositioning?
Thanks

I really struggle to understand this myself I had put them on the wing mirrors, but because they were so high, you also had to see them from low behind the car, so the rear arches got in the way.
I have ended up putting them on the rear arches, but you have to be careful they are not too far back from the front of the car (2600mm iirc), but he kindly measured and marked their position for me.
He also said they would be OK on the front cycle wings, so you should be OK.

I'll post some pics later when I can get back in the garage.

This is the front of Dunk3 car. He told me on Sunday that if the indicators on the nose was 400mm or less from the out side of the widest part of the car he would not of needed the indicators on the top of the wings just the side ones.
He passed the IVA not long ago

Here's a pic of the new location of my side repeaters as marked out by the IVA guy:
