ST170 Inlet

I purchased an ST170 engine with ecu, key, etc. on the basis I would install into my Tiger Avon build, thanks to Big Wasa's write up.

I did a crude engine test fit over the weekend and it looks like the inlet will not clear the chassis rails. I know I could go down the TB/aftermarket ECU path, though I quite like the idea of the standard ECU with fully controlled VVT.

I wont know for sure if the inlet will fit until the engine mounts arrive later in the week, assuming its doesn't. Do I have any other options that will let me retain the original ECU. I guess I will need a maf based inlet to run the original ECU, maybe a standard blacktop? i know I'll lose the variable inlet feature, will this reduce power considerably?

Make a log type plenum that will fit the plastic part with the injectors on the head and bang the TB on wherever you have enough room.

Although if your steering shaft clears the OE manifold I'm sure there is enough room under the alternator bracket at the front of the engine for a mount.

That's not really an option ^^ if the ecu doesn't see the dual stage inlet doing its thing it knocks a good 20bhp of the top and puts the Mil light on.

Maybe just modify the chassis?

That's one way around it!, was hoping for less drastic options. Big Wasa, if I use an alternative inlet but keep the inlet controller connected, will this keep the ecu happy or is it more intelligent?
Even if that works, a 15-20 BHP drop negates the main benefit of using the standard ecu, etc. Looks like I may have to go TB, megasquirt and ME vvt controller.

You can take the outer section of the inlet off and turn it upside down.

Yeah I think it does but the stabiliser bracket won't. Nothing that can't be sorted. I am not sure if it would gain anything on a 7.

You might get away with ditching the mani and just having the Imrc pull a spring so it thinks the manifold is opening and shutting.

This will alter mid range torque but with a 7 being less than half the weight of an st170 I could not say how much it would affect the drive.

Upside-down inlet sounds like its worth a try, engine mounts are due tomorrow, once in I'll be able to see if that will solve the chassis clearance issue.

Put the engine in place and test fitted the inlet upside down, it's not a direct fit as;

The inlets are not equally spaced
The idle control valve hits the fuel rail
The manifold hits the fuel rail inlet feed

All of these issues can probably be overcome with longer hoses and a mount? Though will need to check bonnet clearance.
