Top wishbones

Can anyone help me with some information about top wishbones. Some wishbones have the to ball joint set at an angle to the horizontal. Apart from creating the impression that both wishbones are parallel is there any other reason for this.
Also can anyone give me a measurement for this angle.

On cars using Sierra uprights the adapter that takes the place of the strut sits off the vertical, so to give a full range of movement the ball joint has to point slightly upwards (at the same angle). On Cortina uprights the ball joint is almost horizontal so there's no need.
