Mk1 Escort Steering Rack Dimensions

Hi All,

I'm looking for a little help here.

Does anyone have a diagram or sketch showing the dimensions of the Mk1/2 Escort steering rack?
Ideally need;-

1) Distance between mounting points
2) Distance to splined column from centre
3) Length of centre tube (between joints)

I'm looking to fit one in something else and need to know it will fit before buying!

Can anyone help?

Thanks for reading.

I just happen to have one on my garage floor so have done a quick measure up with a tape measure.

Note I have centered the rack so that the two gaitors are roughly equally expanded and wound the track rod ends right in . As it has the gaitors on, the length of the rack is only approximate as I had to go by feel.

This is a quick rack (approx 2.4 lock to lock) and the only marking I can find on it is on the cover plate for the steering box which says 4771.

A second opinion by anyone else would be useful.

Hope this helps.

And depending on what uprights / steering arms you have there are two types of track rod end tapers.

Hi All,
Apologies for raising this old thread but i’ve Now started a new project and need more help along the same lines...

I’m changing the running gear from Sierra to Jag. Thought that I could use the old Sierra rack but it’s too wide and fouls the chassis.

Does the mk2 Escort rack share the same rod end threads as the Sierra?
Are the splines on the input shaft the same?

Is anyone able to measure the bolt spacing on the Escort rack clamps?

Thanks again for the help.

RE: rod ends, you'd be able to buy ends that fit the Escort one if the Sierra threads were different anyway - and I would not think they cost much. This detail should not stop you buying an Escort rack.

The rack clamps I have are slotted for the bolts so there would be adjustment anyway (but i'll measure tonight as i'm doing my side panel rack cut outs at the moment!).

Hi thanks for your help.

Just planning ahead as I haven’t got the rack yet and have a nearly new Sierra rack and fittings sitting here.

The Sierra rack just won’t work with what i’m Doing.
