Recon these half shafts (std Sierra push-ins)

As part of my ever increasing 'winter spruce up' I noticed that one of my half shafts seems to of split or is leaking.

This is them together, standard sierra half shafts I guess.

This is a close up of where it seems to of split or is defo leaking, the greasey looking line right in the middle of the picture.

Are these easy to strip, re-grease and reseal?

Any guides out there as I could not find much at all.

Those don't look like standard sierra drive shafts, they look shortened - i'm mentioning this in case you look to get recon ones.

The cans are discontinued by ford so you're going to struggle with the recon. If you do find somewhere that sells them (or you can use another cars) please let me know as i've got to rebuild some shortly.

Contact Steve or Jay at Fury Sports Cars as I believe they still get hold of them.

Many years back I bought recon kits from my local Ford main dealer. The kits contained the metal cans, rubber boots and metal bands to secure them. Stripping the old metal cans off was fiddly and having to hold the joint together whilst peening the edges of the replacement cans was also tricky. That said the recon'd joints worked fine and never leaked.

If the cans are discontinued (MikeR) that could well be a problem for you trying to source parts and do it yourself.

Also (MikeR) the shafts in your pictures do look modified (shortened perhaps) so exchanging them for normal ones may not work either.

I gave up on mine (wanting to ensure they were all 'new' and switched to bolt-on's as they can be bought new off the shelf. Fortunately it was post build so wasnt fussed by need to change diff and carriers etc.

I do have two new recon ones (push in type) that were made for my Fury but were the wrong size so they sent me new ones out and didn't want these ones back. I can measure the length if you like. They are cut down ones with a welded sleeve on.

I'll hopefully get a chance to measure them tomorrow and will post up the lengths.

Just remembered I posted about these on my build blog when I had the problem and made up a document that has some measurements that my prove useful, have a look http://www.martinsfurybuild.co.uk/downloads/Driveshafts.pdf

These are when fitted to the Fury chassis but some of the lengths are for the shafts

There are also some pictures in my photo archive under drive shafts

Thanks for the input guys, I know these are shortened, it is the cans on the outside ends that I am most worried about, especially as there seems to be a grease leak and some wobble.

tims31, I will measure mine and take a look at your details tonight. I am interested in them.

If I decide to re-pack and just clean them up, I will let you all know as others are interested in them.

As assumed by all though, I have first dibs!

It is a pain if the recon parts are no longer available. Mine are original and will probably fail at some point.

Will be a pain if I need to change the diff, carriers and shafts to fix leaking boots.

Managed to measure the drive shafts I have for those that were interested,

The overall length of one of them is 755mm with the distance between the shoulders (see the lines on the image below) 540mm

The other one is 745mm overall length and 533mm between the shoulders

Description
Description

As you can see, the shafts were cut down and sleeved then welded by Steve at Fury Sports Cars who has been doing thee for years.

Some of the paint on the cans has peeled off a bit as you can see in the image but other than that they are unused and reconed by Fury Sports cars
