Steering Columns
Hi,
I currently have an old escort steering column. It wont pass the SVA, so I need a replacement.
Will a sierra column fit? I need one that is colapsable see.

A Sierra column is certainly not a drop in replacement for the Escort one, they are very different. However, many people (most I suspect) have used
the Sierra column for a locost build.
The end of the Sierra column is triangular rather than splined, so you need to construct a matching linkage to go between the column and the rack.
The mounting points are different, and if you want to use the column switches they are also very different from the Escort ones.

Hi,
thats a bugger. Its all in situ, works fine, I was hoping for a nice easy swap.
I dont use any switches etc or even the ignition key/barrel - its just a bare column.
I was hoping for the same from the sierra.
Is there any companies that can make the changes I need to a sierra column so I just bolt it on?

If it's any use, I know that Rally Design do a coupling that goes from the Sierra Column to the splines on the Escort rack

Why do you think the Escort column won't pass the SVA?
It's what Westfield use.

Note to all: I really don't know when to leave well alone. I tried to get clever with the mods, then when they gave me a lifeline to see the
error of my ways, I tried to incite more trouble via u2u. So now I'm banned, never to return again. They should have done it years ago!

Dax also produce a conversion from a seirra column to an escort rack. If you take in the column they weld it on for you while you wait.
May be cheaper but not sure so you will have to check.

Hi Chris,
It was after a post I made months ago, and I was told it wasn;t collapsable ad therefore wouldnt pass the SVA.
I'd welcome your comments if this isn;t correct.

I can't see from that picture but if the lower shaft doesn't line up directly with the top portion (I think from memory it's 10
degrees) then it would pass. You could also fit a collapsable steering boss.
Have a look how Westfield do it.

I'll take a better picture tonight - that one is from ages ago!
I just need to figure out where I can get a collapsable steering boss to suit my steering wheel. I'll post a picture of that too.

If you get the whole column from a Sierra it WILL mate to a MkII Escort steering rack. I only had to extend the bottom link and I did that with a bit
of careful welding.
From your picture it looks like you already have a suitable bottom link. It also mates to a triangular section on the Escort column (also in your
picture). The Sierra column in my car has exactly the same triangular section so I think you may be able to fit a Sierra column directly to your car.
You may need to make changes under the dahs to attach the Sierra column but it's not hard.

Unless I've misunderstood what ^^^^^says is correct, (as long as you use a non power steering Sierra lower link).
That's what I've done.
