Newbie

Hi, I am collecting an already built and registered locost locally (west cornwall) on saturday, and very short term its got to live outside, I have seen car covers on ebay for about £30 but thought better to ask you people first as you know whats best to have etc etc.

The car currently has a fireblade engine fitted but isn't complete in this state, and the actual bike engine route isn't something that overly interests me, I am not looking for mega power just the opportunity to own a "7" lookalike is good enough for me, so an engine with approx 100bhp will suit me fine, the handling is something that interests me far more, is the mazda mx5 a good route to take as its already rwd, or is it still an option to put ford crossflow engines in, or even old "A" series engine from the midget or even the marina(i know that won't make 100bhp very cheaply) thanks,

Mark

Regarding the cover - I would by the double layer light blue one from Halfrauds. You can overly gaurentee the quality of ones from ebay and for an extra £10 or so you get free delivery if you go and get it!

Medium premium cover fits well. If it does not have full roof wet weather gear then rig up a brrom with an old tea towel duct taped on the end. Hook it over the roll bar going forward at an angle. That will keep a good angle and prevent rain pooling in the middle. Just be careful, it can act like a sail in high wind!!!

I have kept mine outside for over 2 years.

Welcome to the world of motoring heaven. Fast cars these things, regardless of power.

Will head off to halfords tomorrow, the car came to me at a very reasonable price but that honda engine just isn't for me, its in and running but has no prop, so my initial thought/plan is to remove it and its rather lovely exhaust manifold and offer it for sale possibly through here or on ebay, that will recoup some of my purchase price then I can go find an engine that appeals to me, i have seen, heard and looked at the bike engined cars a few times and they really are engineering marvels, but as this is only my second RWD car, and the first was an old skoda estelle which actually had the engine behind the back wheels I will be more than happy with less power and less revs!!! thanks for your replies already I think I am going to benefit from this forum

Another vote here to stick with the Fireblade engine for the time being and get the car back on the road. It's only about 125bhp and who knows, you may well get to like the power delivery and six speed sequential gearbox of a BEC.

I will get it home on saturday and take a good look, normally I would of done the "take a good look" bit before I bought it, but this time round i got excited pretty much as soon as the garage door was open and I was staring at the little thing, its a car known on the forum I believe, owned by a user called Boggle, and the car is called Fugly

This one?: http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=144535

Looks a good build. I would second the idea of sticking with what you have; get the prop sorted by proper specialist; not expensive. And use as is; changing it will take longer than you expect unless you are experienced with fabrication (i.e. welding!). Why is there no prop? You could be on the road quickly and make the best of the weather before it turns to winter; then upgrade/engine swap if you still want to..

Note I prefer an CEC; but if I had a BEC I would use it for while, these cars are so light weight I might even change my mind!

Cheers

Dan

thats the one!!!! I worked with barry for a couple of years but he has moved away and the car is still in cornwall at his dads place, perhaps the bike engine can stay, reason for not having a prop is simply as he installed that engine and the project stalled due to family commitments etc etc etc etc(life!!!)

HI,
I guess the first bit of advice i can give is to live with the car as it is for a while. Before spending any extra wedge on trying to improve whats already there - blast around in it for a while , that way your making the most of the great british weather before it gets too cold, and then you can plan the "winter project" - ready for spring.
Have fun,
Chris.

Car delivered home this evening, for what it has cost I am very very pleased, the bike engine install is not complete by a fair way, but with a splash of lecktrickey this evening it does turn over, parts to finish the engine install at a quick glance is a prop, coolant hoses, gear linkage, and somewhere along the way the brakes have gone AWOL, but for an already registered car its excellent for what I want.
With the parts required for that engine in my mind, and the fact that although I haven't driven a BEC I do think I will sell that engine and its rather tasty manifold and exhaust on, no real rush to get it on the road, I can work through the rest of the mechanicals amd trim while casually looking for an engine/box, I work for a steel fabrication firm and have access to all workshop machinery including cnc laser and plasma, and can tack up some mounts before one of the clever MIG men at work fully weld for me, I like old skool stuff so a little old crossflow motor would keep me happy, with a carb and a dizzy, simple like the cars new owner.

Engine starts and runs on the key, gear linkage isn't finished, or coolant hoses and there is no prop, as is what sort of money do running 893cc blade engines fetch, the manifold and exhaust is complete and is really neat, I am going to make a long project of the car and stick a car motor in there, origin undecided at the moment but once there is a hole in the chassis where bike engine was sat i will look at options

Sounds like it wouldn't take long to finish it as a BEC and get a few rides out in it before the seasons over. That way you could take your time deciding and planning which car engine to fit over the winter. Seems a shame to me but ultimately it's your choice........

As it currently has a Blade engine fitted, I'm guessing the near-side panel has been cut out to allow the exhaust to fit? You may therefore need to factor in the cost of a new side panel, depending on the car engine you eventually choose. Not sure what 893 Blade engines go for these days but I'd reckon about £500 for the lot including the exhaust manifold.

The side panel has been cut out you are right, I work for a steel fabrication company so a new panel wouldn't be too much of an issue, I think your guestimate of £500 for that engine sounds fantastic, didn't realise they make that sort of money, A few friends who sadly banger race all build zetec engined capris these days, obviously they do not have to take into consideration anything legally, or even nicely made, but they are all familiar with running these modern engines on carbs using the ford edis ignition, I have cut out lots of waterjet inlet flange/manifold plates for the zetec in the past, and have the autocad drawing here at home in case I need to think about making one for myself, thanks for you input.
