Steering Column Travel/Movement?

Evening all,

My steering column is fixed in place and I understand it has a collapsible section. However with a bit of force on the wheel it can be pushed along the length of the column and pulled back. Clearly this isnt correct or safe, but what might I be missing to secure the column, any ideas?

Bad picture of connection to steering wheel boss:

Movement can be seen in this portion (max gap shown)

Steering column for reference, I think its a Sierra?

Its a bit like this, but not as cool or innovative:

The inner should have a big spring on the bottom. Behind the boss there should be a spacer. It would normally be black and have a lobe for cancelling the indicator and a notch that locates in the boss.

With these to there will be no slop.
