category C write off

Hello all.
I’m after a bit of advice. If I was to buy a category C write off and repair it myself what procedure do I have to follow to get the car back on the road?
The car was my sons and has been written off but it has been offered back to me.
Is there a government test like an IVA and a registration cost?
Once the car is registered do you have to wait until you receive the V5 back before it can go back on the road?
Would it get a new registration?

Thanks Martin.

You used to need a VIC check but I beleive the process has been relaxed so check the latest on the dvla webste.

If you google Vehicle Identity Check it should find the info you need.

Unless it's changed in the last couple of years you just need a VIC(vehicle identity check)carried out at a VOSA test centre once it's repaired just to prove it's not a ringer.
It will retain its original registration etc

Vic has been abolished. All you need is the V5 and an mot, insurance it and tax it and your on the way.

Last cat C I bought before the Vic came in was to apply for the V5, mot it, insurance and tax it.

Go for it!

Don't forget to check Insurance costs , I think some charge more for these.

Hi,
If you need any help with insurance for a previously written off vehicle then please feel free to give us a try. Our schemes have no issues with Category C vehicles.
