Before they go on Ebay. As the title says, 7 inch 2.25 dia 225 lb Rally Design Springs. Used for about 3 weeks to stiffen up the front of my J15. Great on a track day, but a little bit firm for me on the road

£25 posted or £20 collected from Kirkburton near Huddersfield.

Hi Paul,

Out of interest, what springs are you running now and did you need to fit anti-roll bars to keep stability? If you thought 225lbs were firm then you'll understand when I say that I've got 275lbs all round on my Mojo so it's like a go-kart at the moment! I'm looking to soften it up and our chassis and layouts are not too dissimilar so I thought I would ask before making any decisions of what rate to try first...

Hi Ed,

generally, J15's run 200 front and 300 rear supplied by Jeremy. Mine came with 175 fronts and 300 rears. I had a bit of an off at Olton Park so I decided to change the balance to make it more likely to understeer on the limit. It certainly worked by putting 225's in the front but I preferred the feel of the car with 175's.

My plan now is to drop the rears to 250 to again, tend to understeer but keep a more compliant ride.

With 275 all round on your car, as you say, it must be razor sharp at the front end!! Jeremy reckons that to notice any change in spring rate, you need to change them by at least 50 lb

I've stuck with 200 front and 300 rear, and plan mainly to use my J15 on track. Having just had a a first brief drive it feels suitably stiff, but the only real way to tell is to get it to the set up experts. I've tried to keep my car as light as possible during the build, but clearly, the heavier it is, the higher the spring rates will need to be. I would be surprised if 275 all round is optimum considering the approx 60 / 40 weight distribution. sounds like the fronts would be better of softer.

I went to see Andy Bates at AB Performance to get the setup checked over so I do have good data for corner weights, and indeed the 60/40 split is almost spot on.

quote:

Weights:
Total including me & full tank: 674.5kg

Corners (kg)
Front: 120.5 | 140.5
--------------------------
Rear: 202 | 212

Corners (%)
Front: 18% | 21%
--------------------------
Rear: 30% | 31%

Ride heights:
Front: 110mm | 110mm
--------------------------
Rear: 125mm | 135mm

We tried to balance up as much as possible but we did conclude that the current springs are just too stiff for the car and a sizeable step would be sensible, especially with the fronts. I've got the same Puma 1.7 engine as you so I think that I will keep the 275 at the rear and grab Pauls 225's that are on offer here for the fronts. Seems like a sensible way to start off and should be fairly well behaved on the road until I can fit some anti-roll bars (the Mojo doesn't have them as standard, hence the reliance on very stiff springs).

Paul - can you U2U me some payment details and I'll send over the funds.

I think that my ISP had a fart this morning as I had an email drop out as well for a little while. Looks like it's up and running again now though.
