Donors.. what do people use
I used a sierra (specifically an xr4x4)
what other stuff is most common
sierras all varietys
Cortina's - all varietys?
MX-5's - only mk1's I believe
and E46 BMW's seems to be on the increase
anything else?

(Looking back),
Mk1/2 escorts,
capris.
Granadas have been used IIRC.
(Going forward - )
E36 BM's aswell as E46
Subaru rear end has been used, and MNR (and others) use freelander rear end IIRC.
Not many other modern RWD cars really.

The only modern donors that there's a few of are the mx5/e36/e46.

what about the kit manufacturers
MK recommended Sierra stuff to me. I think most others are the same or am I wrong.
but as sierra stuff is getting harder to find are the BMW's the future?
If they are, are the E36 and E46 the same hubs/rear end?

Most won't change till there's no Ford stuff about, I guess they don't want to pay for the development and new tooling/jig
costs.
E36+46 diff's aren't the same, Pretty sure the hubs aren't either.
Everyone has got their own opinions on whats the way forward.

scorpio's & mk3 granada's - 90% the same as a sierra but a bit easier to get hold of these days (mines a Mk3 granada)
and the jag XJ6 / XJ40's are common for the cobra replicas
as above most older se7en's seem to have been based on mk1/2 esort, capri, granada or cortina's as some point in there history
as for the future what about the mid engined kits with FWD donors - as far as I know MEV use mk1 focus's in most of there cars
I know Dax are working on a BMW based rush, but I've no idea when it'll be ready...

This must be a stoopid question as no one here seems to have mentioned them before that I've ever seen.
Why not a Mercedes donor? They're mostly RWD aren't they?
Or are they FWD? Or rear gearbox or something weird?
Just wondering why I never seem to have seen Merc' donors.

GKDs kits are advertised to suit E36 and E46, however, im not sure what changes they may have to make to suit which donor you choose.

Their Donor list seems to dicate only a few differences between the two.

I think the rear uprights that they produce are different and the diff mounting is too. The e36/46 engines mount in the same position on the same
mountings.

Oooh, thats a good'un! I dont think they are too expensive as MOT failures (the older ones) and they all seem to be front gearbox and RWD.

I know Jon from WLM made a Merc' diesel based car and I think it was standard RWD AFAIK.

A lot of Mercs will be auto, ok in a kit except for the auto probably controlled by the ecu, which means having to use the ecu which might lead to
problems when the ecu won't let you start the car because it thinks one of the back doors is open!

I don't think they ever sold in the same sort of numbers as the e36/46.
Isn't someone on here building some awesome AGM WLR with a huge(5.0ish) merc engine?

I'm sure I came across a 190 based locost on google before (and it's sugested in the Book).
I wouldn't think price would be an issue as they seem to be cheaper than BMWs, I think the auto thing would make sense as most manual Mercs are
diesels (from a quick look in auto trader).
I think the future will be FWD donor bits in the back but we can only wait and see.

older ! simpler ! cheaper !
looking at all the references to zetecs and the like i must be the only bloke planning to use marina back end and 1275 a series ...........could be
done with a moggy as a donor too , back to basics simple job , skinny tires and only 60 odd bhp .....(if its tuned)
