Garage door recccomendations
sdh2903 - 8/2/16 at 01:22 PM

Starting my garage build in the next few weeks and starting to look at garage door options. I fancy a remote roller door. There are plenty to choose from. Any one have any suggestions? Or more importantly ones to avoid?

Cheers
Steve

GLIDEROLL I have fitted several of these , manual and electric for myself and friends. I have found them to be good quality at a reasonable price. You can order them with the electric motor pre-fitted or add this retrospectively. I have bought the latest doors from a company called , Country Wide Garage Doors , they have been great to deal with and most importantly very competitively priced......especially as they advertise on ebay. You place your order with them , and then the door is delivered direct from the factory.

Had a Secure0glide insulated roller fitted by these guys in 2011. Very pleased with it. I still love the remote control.

Bought a Hormann remote sectional door from the same place. Not difficult to fit yourself if you choose. Good service and price.

Sectional cos it is better insulated, supposedly more secure and does not need as much height above the lintel.

I replaced my broken garage door 2 years ago. Two installers recommended manual doors over electric roller doors, which I fancied myself. In the end I went for a manual up and over door, which was cheaper and works really well. It's not insulated, but could have been for a little more cash. All in I'm more than happy with it and the wife and kids get on fine with it as well. Given the choice again I'd go manual and spend the spare money on other improvements like power sockets and lighting.

I see where you're coming from nick but I have an irrational hatred of up and over doors after one nearly took my finger off replacing a spring. Ive budgeted for a roller door I just need to decide whether to stretch to the remote versions.

Take your point ref. injury and springs - I paid the installer to remove the broken door for fear of injury myself.

If going roller then you have to have a remote just for personal pride in doing so.

You could always go for side hung doors, that is what I am planning, you can get ones that are 1/3 - 2/3 split so you can use one as a side door without opening up the whole garage.

We just replaced our up and over with a quality roller door, wish I had done it when we first moved in three years ago, there is no contest.

Which door did you go for mark?

Sorry, this would have helped

http://www.rollergaragedoorscentre.co.uk/standard-roller-garage-doors.htm

Mines 4.5m wide, was £1,790 with the extra security bolting fitted, although it would have been easy enough to fit with a mate I did not fancy cutting the old one out. Big nasty looking springs on that.

Another vote for Seceuroglide and also garagedoorsonline.

Easy to fit, although if you do fit it yourself it does affect the guarantee. It reduces it to standard 1 year rather than the 5 year if installed by a sws approved installer.

That being said the product is so well made that i wouldn't worry, also its one of the few doors that you can repair, individual slats are replaceable.
