What a robbing bastard !

Minicooper - 12/5/13 at 07:25 PM

It must be fixed or replaced as it starts and runs fine, unless the smoke only happens at high revs?

David

bashracing - 12/5/13 at 07:28 PM

the seller mab ltd is a car body repair shop in Cheshire, and pretty much all his cars he has sold where his sisters or mothers according to his listings, but if you look at his buyer feedback he's bought a lot of repair panels for said cars!, that made me look deeper and found the topic on wscc forum, i'm glad I did some digging as I was going to paypal a deposit for it!

beaver34 - 12/5/13 at 07:29 PM

Still a cheap car though even with a rough engine

that's not how wankels work, they will run fine from cold but once fully upto temp smoke like a pig when they are down on compression

Wadders - 12/5/13 at 07:36 PM

Not read through it all in detail, but whats so sinister, guess i'm missing something?

tomgregory2000 - 12/5/13 at 07:40 PM

I like the fact that he thinks back pressure has destroyed his engine
Some people

bashracing - 12/5/13 at 07:47 PM

excessive back pressure on a wankel heats up the rotor housing faster than the rotors and reduces the operating area of the rotor tips, this wears the tips and causes low compression and smoking and a bill for £2000 for a rebuild

In a nutshell, on the forum he says the engines wanked on the eBay ad he doesn't.

Daddylonglegs - 12/5/13 at 08:04 PM

Shame there isn't a way of alerting eBay to his shanannegins

bashracing - 12/5/13 at 08:07 PM

he keeps dropping the price I sent him a message telling him to be truthful about the state of the engine but he won't reply now
, someone's going to get shafted

jossey - 12/5/13 at 08:10 PM

ill contact ebay.

ive sent the link to them and explained the situation.

[Edited on 12/5/13 by jossey]

Wadders - 12/5/13 at 08:25 PM

Unless i'm reading it wrong it's the original owner who says the engine is shot, not the bloke now selling it, looks to me
like the second poster on WSCC bought it from the OP presumably cheaply and is now flogging it on ebay for a profit.

Fair enough he might be a shyster trying to pull a fast one, but what's to say he's not fixed it between then and now, maybe the motor was not shot? who knows, not me, or anyone else on here thats for sure......

Al.

steved - 12/5/13 at 09:23 PM

i am the person selling the car , nothing sinsister at all if you read the advert , the engine was suppoosed to be smoking ,it was bought for a customer who was planning on us fitting a bike engine and letting wgt have the removed engine and box but obviously had rose tinted glasses and obviously had no money and let me down worst thing is its a freind , but i still bought the car as to not let the seller down at worst i will get my money back from the purchase and collection fee , as it clearly states in the advert pip from wgt auto developments (rx specialists)has looked at the car and he says it all looks and souns fine ,no undue smoke or anything but he will be doing a hot compression test leter this week when he has time , i have nothing to hide i have even contacted gavin from who we bought it to let him know we cannot find any engine issue
i wish people would not put two and two together and get ten without knowing the facts
i did reply to the question asked on ebay by the op when he said the engine was knackered ,stating what i have just posted in this thread yet he still posted this thread on here

i have been a wscc member sinse 1997 and have building and repairing westfields i even have westfield chassis jigs and have several customer westfields in at the moment for repair ,i aslo build and repair elise's and other older lotus cars elans 26rs etc and have been for 20 odd years so would like to think i know what im doing , yes i own a body shop and have done for 27 years it is insurance approved , i do buy salvage cars and sell cars and parts i also buy parts to repair them from ebay amongst other places etc etc ,
strange place the interweb sometimes when people stick there noses in though

thanks steve

Apologies from me.

steved - 13/5/13 at 03:55 AM

no problem at all mate , the thing that boils my wee is i got several pm's on the wscc telling me about this thread i have never been on here before but i find bashracing lying through his teeth , he sent me one message on ebay which i replied to and was honest in my reply ,he has not sent me anymore messages so why lie and say he has and that i'm not responding to them now and then start a thread on here ,its beyond belief
,yes i have dropped the price , so what thats up to me im the seller thats my perogative

tbh its the kind of thing kids do start threads and lie but in reality it can ruin someones buisness , i have been in buisness 27 years and i dont want my reputation spoiled by lies on here when i have been serving the wscc comunity well as far as i know for years

people have been saying to me for years why not go on locostbuilders its great on there loads of nice easy going folk and some good info and techi threads , i didnt expect to be on here having to defend myself from lies ,because of this thread i am even getting threatening messages through ebay , seriously what is wrong with people ,i have been totally honest as i said i have even contacted the origonal owner letting them know whats going on , people have even been reporting me to ebay ,for what telling the truth
how can people say the engine is no good when no one off here has seen the car or had it running yet feel they are experts on it enough to post on here even though a rotary specialist has said it all seems fine some people are even sending threatening messages through ebay

What a crock of shit, why would you not have the compression checked pre sale ?,

spaximus - 13/5/13 at 06:39 AM

I am a member of the Westfield club and Steve has over and over again proved what a standup guy he is. For many members who have had accidents Steve has straightened their chassis at no charge an offer he made to the club at that time, he has bought and sold cars to club members and as far as I am aware he is straight talking and honest. It is sad in this day and age that making a profit is still seen as being wrong by others.

It would be worth most of the asking price even as a non runner, I can't see the issue either sorry. Have any of the people complaining about it actually made offers or asked to see it ?

if anyone wants to view the car feel free to pop down and have a look at it for yourselves and make our own minds up ,I cannot be any fairer than that can I then you can see the engine is fine , im just off jun 18 on the m6 so not to far away from leeds bashracing so even yourself could pop down

pip will be doing a compression test as said he did not do it Saturday because he was on his way home and just called in ,wgt is a stones throw away from me
If myself or pip had any doubts about the engine I would have not if advertised it for sale

again I have nothing to hide if anyone else has any issues please feel free to call me on 01606 834420 work hours instead of spreading rubbish on a forum

bashracing yes you are right , I am trying to sell my wifes 10 plate fiesta tdci zetec , and I have recently sold my mothers 206 sw on ebay , so what is that a crime , feel free to check photo copies of the v5's if you like I have them here , you will see that my mother owned the 206 for a year or so

Seems simple to me if you want to buy the car look at it yourself and decide if the car is ok if you don't want to buy it shut up and don't slag people off on a forum
I'm sure every member on here describes everything they sell on eBay perfectly accurately and don't use it to get rid of crap that doesn't work properly

After trawling through every post on this thread I would think it would be a good idea for the Moderators to remove the whole thread as its turning into a character assasination and surely thats not what this forum is about.

This sort of information can destroy the guys business....all for the sake of one guys perception of the way he conducts his business.

Just my opinion of course.

I quite agree. It is often wrongly assumed that the law of libel does not apply to forums etc. Unfortunately for poor Chris - who is now it seems the subject of mass slagging off - he could be held responsible alongside the OP. It is a fairly simple legal process to obtain the details of individuals hiding behind usernames.

Perhaps far better than removing the thread would be a full and proper apology from the OP. Any chance?

People who are so willing to give their time and knowledge to the benefit of others and a great community.

I also think this is a brilliant forum full of helpfull members who live and breathe their creations, Its sad that Steve has been publicly slated on here, all because he is a Trade seller, he is after all running a business so needs to make a profit, I have owned my own business for the past 30 odd years and can understand that mud can stick and can ruin a guys livelyhood.

He seems to have been honest in saying come and test drive it and see for yourself!!! as another member said ..who in the right mind would'nt check a car prior to purchase? as a trader he has to give some sort of warranty.... so buying this particular car from him would be safer than buying it off the last owner surely.

Anyway I agree with Theshed that an apology would be in order from bashracing ...at least that would go some way to exonerate Steve.

I like to add I dont know Steve or Bashracing and have no affiliation to either of them.

Well,
This car is now mine and and ive been thoroughly loving it! The engine is still going strong and the price i paid factored in the fact that even if it was toast then the money paid for the car was still good value.

The only issue is noise it makes 109 dB at 6740 revs ( 3/4 throttle). This is being addressed by modifying the manifold to equal length and increase in diameter. the silencer is going to be 7" diameter and 2.5 " id. This silencer is is being made to be repackable.

With a lid on its great fun as it nullifies the noise but i wish to do so airfield circuits so 100 dB is the aim.

Longterm i wish to enter a few races next year in Castle Combe special GTs ( noise regs max 108) so i know the new setup will get me a race . I'm not gonna win anything but at least i'm on the grid! The cars had a double header race this year and everything's in date so pound for pound i'm in a Westfield race car for what a saxo or mgzr race car would have cost me!

Its also got a daytime mot so ive been out during the day init scaring myself silly.

My only concern is the axle as i know nothing about it and its all a bit new to me so been googling. I'm led to believe its english with a 4.1 lsd so long term it may give up with the power its subjected to.

I had 2 rotaries an RX7 FD and rx8 231....i blew up 1 didnt.... LOL.

PhillipM - 21/9/13 at 02:05 PM

The manifold doesn't want to be equal length....

It has the 6 port 231 bhp engine fitted....but on a dyno new they make more like 210....I have not dyno d this engine yet....but long term plan is to port another engine during rebuild that should see 250 bhp.

Im awaiting car back from having the exhaust done....if it smokes then it will confirm an oil control ring is letting by and I will get this engine rebuilt rather than keeping as spare / track over winter...

Any info on car would great.

I read these posts before I bought the car ! When viewing I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks

Cars back From Torque designs in Salisbury.....Fantastic job.....so much quieter.....Fantastic to drive.

No smoke when giving it beans atall so no oil control rings issue.....need me track day real soon. 7

Done a quick home noise test and 100dB at 6750....cool.

i love it!

steved - 20/10/13 at 04:49 PM

glad all is well and your enjoying it , i had pip around the other day trying to convince me to take the busa out of the back of my spaceframe mini and fit a rx motor , seriously tempted the power and noise of the wankel is very adictive , but then again so is a bike engine and with the sequential on paddle flatshift

i am the worlds biggest supercharged/chargecooled k20a fan but i think bike engines are the future

HI mate .....its the neighbours fault I got the westfield as he has a dax rush with an s2000 on itbs.

I was aiming for a Radical with a busa but just not enough funds and a whole tier higher in terms of mainteance and running costs.

Im itching for a trackday ....booked up 3 weeks to go!

Have some plans but need to track it first but im hoping to port another engine when being fresh built.

Ive read up on the axle and my only real worry.

Ive v mounted the rad and oil cooler and that has got the coolant temps down with no increase in oil temp .

Ive banned myself from driving it on the road for the time being else its gonna end in tears lol.

Jon

boosted - 27/10/13 at 02:23 PM

Hi mate,

Do you think the axle will take 255 bhp? Ive got a spare engine and this is having some special porting during rebuild and should see a proven 255...torque will be lower as rotary?

Worth it in the end as can get the weight back and get rid of gearstick link.

Car is being painted mazda winning blue with diamond shape carbon wrap over top.

Scrutineer came round and check car over all good few minors to sort.!

Excellent news good to see something different .
I'm off to see a Rotary engined Westfield tomorrow as have to make a bonnet for it to cover the intake , the car will be out later this year . Will be good to see the progress as last time I saw it was being panelled up .

Hi Boosted

Did you use the standard ECU? Any hints or tips on what's required to get it going (what items could be junked - what needed to be kept)?

Cheers

Scotty

boosted - 12/1/14 at 06:48 PM

Hi Mate, soz for delay in reply was just popping in for nose around and seen your post! I used to get emails but that has stopped.

I'm using the standard ecu and the moment but plan when funds allow to piggy back an Adaptronic in there as specific for the rx8 to control the ports on the hi power engine.

My biggest concern when buying was that canbus was gonna cause some serious headaches.
But the abs is off, the cluster and all airbag control. And ecu still working.

Ive got 4 codes lost comm with abs and instrum cluster. and rear 02 sensor as car does not have 1.

There is still alot of the loom under the birkin and i was going to tackle this but as its working and want to be on the grid for first race plus much needed seat time before hand this is next winters project.

My cars still got the under bonnet fuse box and there is a fair bit of redundant relays cables and fuses in there.

The car is using the original key start with transponder.

Engine wise all sensors are on there minus rear 02 sensor that only monitors efficiency.

Exhaust wise some nice straight headers out of the engine bay give very good gains as original is very restrictive. Noise will be an issue so go big on the silencer!

Cooling, rotarys use the oil to cool as well the coolant so youll need a oil cooler and i have been working on this.

see below my photo buckets open so have a cruise using arrows around as pics tell a thousand words.

Been working on cooling so have just fabricated this....http://s1065.photobucket.com/user/boosted38/media/2014-01-11163434_zpscf2371c4.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1

boosted - 30/1/14 at 04:02 PM

Still at it .....tunnel has been re-visited and new box section added after widening which allows the gearbox to be moved further back. still need a set in the gearlever but no more no. Have made 3 different sets so can settle on best feel.

Removing infill panel has allowed access to loom so this is next job to remove and get rid of redundant plugs and multi connectors.

Made good progress but didnt complete as planned this weekend. Most of wiring soldered back together gave me a headache tbh. Need to make better notes next time.
Ecu on bulkhead fuse box and immobiliser up under dash. Using original fuse and relay box allbeit simplified. Hoping to re-orientate engine loom to exit at rear of engine to plug into ecu, if not will have to lengthen engine loom. Got a spare so can use that but looks like it might reach.

dash made and wrapped and 95% complete just waiting on resistors for the led indicators.

Engine fingers x should be picked up this thursday and ive taken the week off after to hopefully finish and have it running!

Loving the progress diary, it's always good to see something out of the ordinary. But I only found it by accident, I'd actually seen the first part of this thread a while ago and thought the argument was ongoing. Seems a bit of a waste to lose all the fun bits in here. Perhaps a mod could split the better parts of this thread into another one?

boosted - 2/3/14 at 01:15 PM

I agree with above.....as the owner of this westie....if and i very much doubt i wish to sell in the future the beginning of thread would damage resale value. To the original seller. I feel he is totally exhonerated in my eyes...car was fine and engine spot on. Built with some expensive items...ive only changed engine as i wanted a faster rebuilt 1 for racing....The old engine is my spare and lets remember this did a track day no problems. Im happy for mods todo what ever they like to the person that built it id like to buy them a pint!.

On a side note my shortened simplified loom has been hooked up to spare engine and after reinstatement of a 12v feed to ecu all good. It works so a big weight of my mind.

I think you need some more venting on your bonnet LOL.

Good luck with the race and a big thumbs up for going for such a left-field engine choice.

boosted - 4/5/14 at 08:07 AM

vented ha ha....yes its a rotary they run hot due to firing every combustion cycle....and loud hence the massive silencer.

In fact the bulge is purely to make room for the throttle body as i raised the engine as sump clearance was very low.

It is in fact a bonnet scoop from a mitsubishi L200 ..£25 on ebay.

MilesH - 6/7/14 at 08:13 PM

What championship are you running in. I assume it's the sports and GT but which class does the car compete in?

[Edited on 6/7/14 by MilesH]

boosted - 7/7/14 at 02:26 PM

Hi mate,

Castle Combe special gts. they've separated the sports now and they have there own series so no radicals bearing down on you !

Only done 1 race and this year moving to developmental! and expensive ! I have the smallest engine at 1300cc! but rotaries are nobbled by a co-eff of 1.7 so puts me in Class A with the Evos !

I could've raced every 1 apart from the first but everybody else on slicks so in for a penny and all that and ive come this far seems daft not to do the upgrades. Aim this year is to finish on same lap as the winner...Not sure possible.

Funds are getting low tbh as spent over budget and race entry fees spent on new calipers, wheels and tyres! lol old set up has sold so got some dosh for geo and testing friday!

Its a double header this weekend but not making any decisions on entry til we test!

1 race £225.00 15 mins qualify 18 mins race!

Track day £170.00! . I still need to learn the car bigtime so will see what friday throws at me!

boosted - 12/7/14 at 12:55 PM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo28klUXd6k

ooppss!

Bit sore today.

time to mend.

was a hoot! Car was sublime

Driver error me thinks cant remember was on transition from brake to throttle, over analysis now.

Top chassis rail bent among other things!

No regrets was pushing on.

boosted - 13/7/14 at 04:09 PM

rear ns collar had unwound out on track. these shock only have 1 collar and no grub screw? It had unwound 10mm difference that the other.

boosted - 13/7/14 at 04:13 PM

shes level here at start of day!

you can see she sat down lower on ns only when i supported front could i see sat down on ns rear.

boosted - 13/7/14 at 04:16 PM

offside

nearside

i was riding the kerbs but surely these should not unwind themselves?

MilesH - 13/7/14 at 08:09 PM

I can't help on the suspension question, but just wanted to say sorry to see the damage and I hope you get it sorted with minimal cost.

boosted - 14/7/14 at 07:40 AM

Thanks mate what's done is done and i take satisfaction that i got down to 1.17 round combe that is not to shabby at all. The rx8 engine is running perfectly all temps in check and my hardwork over the last 7 months was paying off the car felt sublime.

I also know now that it was not driver error. Ive been tracking at Combe for 15 years and aside a couple of spins thats it and ive always pushed on.

I was out on a session to push race distance and 11 mins in everything was stable oil temp and coolant temp which is great as these beastie rotarys run hot. Noise was fine no driveby exceed.

Car damage wise its a chassis repair to top rail on the front and looks like rear axle has moved over a little...i thought it was a lot but the mismatch ride height made it look worse.

Engine gearbox and all ancillaries are intact and undamaged.

wheels run true left right up down but need to be checked on balancer. Could have been allot worse and i could've seriously

hurt myself.

With coming to the end of the build funds are very low so dont think it'll be out again this year.

Just still cant believe the spring collar unwound like that a good 10mm which is multiple turns the other 3 have not moved atall.

boosted - 14/7/14 at 08:12 AM

Spoke to shock/spring supplier and told would not be cause due to low poundage of spring. And unheard of that they unwind themselves. Should have preload on them which it did 55mm from thread !

Ride height was massively different nsr to osr. Its the only thing i found.

but ....
and/or other factors caliper drag, fluids on circuits etc...chalk it up to experience.

will be junking calipers for new.

Locking collars to be fitted shocks.

Thats all folks miracle if out this year!

gaz_gaz - 14/7/14 at 11:20 AM

What a shame.
Have you got your Hayward engine fitted?
I know in his ts and cs a crash usually cancels the engine warranty

boosted - 14/7/14 at 05:13 PM

Warranty gone on engine when i competed in a race earlier in the year. ran engine up today and all good.

boosted - 17/7/14 at 08:28 AM

no point crying over spilt milk. got the engine out.

boosted - 23/7/14 at 07:53 AM

Pretty much straight now, some bushes to change and then alignment for some final tweaks.

Its over for this year let the bank account heal. But cars got some serious speed got down to 1.175 ish round combe with upgrades before the off so happy. Bloody Caterhams are doing 1.12s but taken from back of pack to mid pack so happy.

Axle coming out for rebuild and prob ratio change on a 4.1 at mo so got todo some sums as to what to stick in there and get the lsd checked/rebuilt.

Not a great first year with only 1 race and 3 rides on the back of the recovery truck but learnt alot made the car quicker and had a lot of fun. It was all coming together and the car felt great. all temps in check and have had no issues whatsover with the rotary engine.

Let the back account recover few more upgrades and be ready and fresh for first race next year.

steved - 17/8/14 at 06:40 PM

boosted - 20/8/14 at 04:19 PM

Yep been a lot of fun.....crashing wasn't but always the risk...not a lot happening at mo. rolling chassis still at mo.... off to be geo'd soon and see whats what.

Axle is coming out and diff rebuild and ratio change to 4.4 poss.

goona do some work on aero, rear diffuser and a front splitter...maybe a little wing on the back but from what ive read it does not work on a seven

Put it all back together and some air field circuits for testing before we venture back to combe.

itching for a trackday so prob gonna bring my Colt Gti outta retirement and have some fun at an airfield which will re-ignite the enthusiasm.

I came down with a bump!

Mr C - 20/8/14 at 05:49 PM

Its great to read up on your exploits with the car, a fantastic thread thread albeit with an unfortunate beginnings. Love the fact you've stuck with the rotary, I think its a brilliant little engine wish I had balls big enough to do the same. The mazda 787b lemans car is my favourite sounding motor of all time. mind you that nutters drift car at goodwood comes a close second!! All the best with getting the car back on the road/track, looking forward to quite a few more successes / updates

Mike

boosted - 20/8/14 at 07:16 PM

Cheers mate, really appreciate your kind words. Would've been back already but gotta let the bank account recover!

Love my rotaries....its a engineers engine ! theres no doubt they have a reliability issue but if your meticulous with your servicing premix and coils! should be reliable ! and 1308 cc over 200 hp! and 9k revs of linear power just awesome!

Mx5 conversion next or my old colt gti....its the colt i wanna do as an evo axle will bolt straight in. But the present engine refuses to die lol and car is 1 of 11 left on the road! So prob a Proton Satria gti as there cheap and a colt gti clone.

Is there enough penetration on that weld? Might be a trick of the light but it looks like the weld is just sat on top of the metal- looks like some of my welds!

Tell me you didn't just cut the ears off that wishbone bracket and weld the new one over the top?

boosted - 1/3/15 at 05:10 PM

nope cut sides off ground and chisel flat part off...bit of a sod tbh

compturbo - 8/4/15 at 12:41 AM

Love the idea of a rotary in one of these! Such a compact engine. RX8 is quite an underrated car too imo

boosted - 8/4/15 at 08:05 PM

Well i went out for a drive today after quite a few months in bits.....awesome brutal acceleration......got 4 wheel alignment done after i set up with tape measure and couple of turns on front toe all good. no adjustment needed to back and now got toe in on rear axle ......very happy indeed. All in green on the machine..no leaks no bangs no rattles no whines..happy days so booked a trackday ! 1 final job rpm on digi dash has stopped working thats it so tomoz job.

Could you have not done a cheeky swap with the white RX-8 you passed? Or did his engine blow up by the end too That looked v quick though, shame the motors just aren't reliable.

I m gonna rebuild it ! 1 more engine as it only took out e shaft and rotor and most parts are reusable....my plates are bridge ported for more power. i'm 99% sure oil surge which wouldve taken a piston engine out as well. so few mods to sump....deeper and baffled and thermostat controlled oil coolers. Come this far.....engines done circa 2000 miles.

oil starvation....

boosted - 11/6/15 at 01:47 PM

done the research its a swap to s2000 power. gather parts mode.

boosted - 16/6/15 at 06:32 PM

picked this up yesterday.

got cracking today.

boosted - 16/6/15 at 06:37 PM

gearbox fits in narrow! (On wood at mo)

could not fit any rotors in here.....on serious note this drops the car down to Class B and should then be competitive....if you race a rotary they apply a co eff to your engine size....which nobbles you b4 you start.

this is a tried and tested route no pioneering here.

boosted - 1/10/15 at 09:20 AM

little update...been a while....The s2000 engine and box is still in garage as would have written off summer track fun doing the conversion. So stuck the spare rotary engine in with a new baffled gated sump from the US of A. been using alot on the road. much fun.

look on ebay over the winter and find a kitcar needing a new engine and box and have 2 !

samjc - 6/11/15 at 10:06 AM

Any updates on the s2000 now winters setting in.

boosted - 6/11/15 at 11:30 AM

well all up in air atmo.....seem to have fubared my shoulder somehow so currently waiting on the consultants prognosis! looks like 8 weeks after op of doing nothing. So just sold the s2000 engine in tall block as couldnt see it happening this winter. I cant drive car atmo for any great length of time defo not a track day how i want to drive it so it wait and see time after op if i can continue to drive the Westy.

the spare is in and running great but has not been subjected to a track day. Has not got the power of the old 1 and miss that power. Im probably gonna do 1 more rotary engine either build this 1 myself or pay a little more and get it rebuilt with warranty.....racing think its done before its started.....cant really compete with the budgets involved and trackdays offer so much more seat time.

colin99999 - 11/11/15 at 11:09 PM

Just watched your Hullavington vid - that was my first outing with my blue & white Ginetta that you passed near the start. What's the rotary like on fuel when you're giving it some?

gaz_gaz - 12/11/15 at 10:53 AM

On track with an RX8 renesis you'll get similar MPG to other cars with similar power and weight.
She's a greedy bugger when poodling around town though.

boosted - 12/11/15 at 07:12 PM

I was gonna say the say as above ! i have a 51 plate wrx wagon...it does 200 miles to £50...get 200 miles outta £60.00 in my road rx8. i dont poodle anywhere. the rex is faster too just!

On track i fill the 20L tank and take 30L with me...i get through it all to 1/4 of tank at Hullavington and got home knackered countless sessions.

factor a little in for premix in the tank. comparable cost.....i once put my evo 8 i had road keevil for a track day and had to refill the tank at lunch time...that was awful.

Im staying rotary put so much work into it i cant quit when i nearly there. oil surge killed the engine that happens too fast piston engines as well on circuit, solve and move on.

gaz_gaz - 12/11/15 at 07:38 PM

glad you've seen sense,
I love a rotary, Had multiple RX7s and RX8s.
Also spoke with Carl Hayward about an engine for a spare chassis I have,
I think the rotary 7 will happen but probably not with a Hayward motor.

colin99999 - 12/11/15 at 09:27 PM

Cool, I'd heard the rotary was similar to piston engine fuel wise running at full chat. If the Zetec in mine goes pop it'd be a nice compact engine/box install to try.

Speaking of fuel, last time out at Hullavington with me and a mate driving we did 85 odd litres of fuel, the car was running pretty much 40 mins of every hour mind. Got through some brakes too! All good fun though...

gaz_gaz - 13/11/15 at 07:56 AM

Hi Rich.
I've spent a fair bit of time down at Eras place.
I had an engine in an old car that was ported by Era and built up by Jon Goodwin that used to do time attack in the RX7 FC.
That's where I'd be going for a motor

Rich J - 13/11/15 at 11:30 AM

Looks super.
I really really want a rotary 7.

boosted - 14/2/16 at 11:34 AM

I think an fd powered 7 would be awesome!
Theres room for the turbos/ turbo....rad and intercooler is the headache. But its do able.
Was on the lookout over winter for a another 7 project but the fd popped up so i bought that.
Widebody independant rear, caged, 7 with fd engine on twins circa 320 bhp i think would be ideal....ive learnt alot passed year or 2 so reckon i could get it right first time hopefully!

No I appreciate its not normal but I read more and more threads on different forums about this kind of thing happening. TDO's seemingly don't want to upset anyone by black flagging and booting them out.

The op's video was exceptional though. That was utter madness! 3 abreast into the chicane, that M3 and the escort dive bombing on the brakes from waaaay back. These are the people that need to be made an example of.

boosted - 4/4/16 at 03:51 PM

The coombe action days are notorious for this and when i started out trackdaying years ago this is how i started..turned up with me scoobydo and let it loose on combe...ive learnt abit since then and if you go on a normal trackday they wont stand for any poor ettiquette...the actiondays are best avoided and get yourself on a proper trackday where any tooling around it swiftly dealt with....i can recomend www.motorsport-events.com for the southwest Ed and Natasha run a very well organised trackday and wont permit any drifting or bullying or rule breaking. you kitcar will shine on a circuit doit!

i only went as itching for a trackday as first of the year and at 40 quid a cheap shakedown.

boosted - 24/5/16 at 11:39 AM

Well im in abit of a dilema.....The rx7 is up and running and been on track and lovin it....with the loss of keevil and hullavington airfield trackdays that are local tome the availability of getting on track for fun has diminished some what.....the westy is great on track but with a low sump and suspension set up for track its lethal on the road and everybodys doing 40 anyway....

the westy in it current guise is not fast enough for Special Gts at combe....on slicks 1.17...i need more like 1.10 tobe competitive.....i still need to scratch the itch but i want at least a fighting chance, currently with no issues id come last in class at around 9th.

how do i go faster? shes on slicks....but live axled? is swapping to irs and some camber gonna make the laptimes tumble?

Wider rear wheels? currently 205 section a005 on the rear....

more power....prob about 220 with the bridge port...about 190 with this engine...laptimes are about the same so i must of got abit faster( or braver)

i dunno....there are other race series but that means driving around the uk and sleeping in the car....not for me....special gts was always the aim.

madness i know i was thinking about grafting an rx8 rear subframe in the rear and dropping an rx7 turbo motor in...but gives headache with wheel size among numerous other things....

car now sits in Class B after a reg change so some progress.

or i just sell up and start again....but with so much blood sweat and cheers it would be like giving a dog away.

The rx7 will never be a race car and would take massive cash tobe competitive and im not selling that either.

a dilema but a good dilema.....

boosted - 11/6/16 at 12:38 PM

Well, is this a bad idea...
Im thinking down the lines of a Mev exocet and putting a mx5 subframe in the back.

ian locostzx9rc2 - 11/6/16 at 01:02 PM

Normal track days are not normally like this and I have done a lot over 14years I have only seen 2 people been kicked out and 99 percent of the people behave themselves so don't be put off as it's the only way you can get your cars to there best .

boosted - 20/9/16 at 03:41 PM

Lost the test mule engine at Combe friday 16th to again rear bearing failure....so gated sump and synionic oil and a high oil pressure regulator did not solve issue...had zero oil in catch tank for 1000 miles.....this used engine did 1049 miles back in the westy....have come to conclusion its just too fragile cant take the continous abuse. so back to square 1.....i tried but seat time is a lot more enjoyable than garage time. Been a hoot but no more rotarys for me...either gonna sell the lot on ebay as lots of bespoke parts or fit summit else in there.

if anybody thinking about the westy rotary in development id make sure you get a cast iron warranty.

anyways not all lost i went home stuck the ol colt gti on the trailer took it back and gave that a pasting around combe.

gaz_gaz - 20/9/16 at 07:23 PM

Was this another Carl Hayward motor that popped?

Jonny at MAC G is racing in an RX8 with a motor built by rotary revs and it seems to be lasting really well. You've come along way. Be a shame to give up now!!

boosted - 21/9/16 at 11:39 AM

No mate 2nd engine was a used good comp engine that after the first failure i fitted to test modifications / safeguards.
It covered 70k plus in a road car but its died in 1000 miles with same bearing failure as brand new engine.
Which leads me to conclude there is an issue that needs resolving....short of dry sump again not sure it will solve it....
Perhaps the engines cannot take sustained high revs on slicks. Have all the kit to monitor oil pressure and temps etc..and not showing any alarms.
Cant continue been a hoot but time to move on.

boosted - 29/12/16 at 01:10 PM

Well,
little update from me....ive managed to buy a crashed rebuilt rx8 231 streetported...engine got 1800 miles on it.

So should be able to quickly sell off the shiny bits and swap the engine over....for 1 last go....

the current old engine has done about 70k plus and succumbed to rear stat bearing failure which is not unusual...

this new engine was built in may this year by Apex Rotary....they dont seem to have the best reputation judging by forum posts but its been nicely run in for me and the engines been comp test good and strong and starts up and runs very nicely.

could possibly end up engine being free as got the whole car for 820 and 200 for transportation.

just need the motivation to get out in the garage and get it done.

3rd time lucky woohoo.

boosted - 27/1/17 at 05:44 PM

Well ive broken the 8 down and stuff is selling fast mainly because ive undercut everybody else on ebay lol....reckon i should end up new engine costing me a few hundred tops...

but the engine is in and running few jobs todo as body work needs to go back on but pretty happy.

I stripped the old unit down expecting to see rear stationary bearing failure on this 80k plus engine but NO! further tearing down relieved the rear rotor bearing completely destroyed...same as other engine....face palm what is happening???? good temps and pressure .....asked about other time attack and sprint competitors and endurance racers using this engine and theyve all gone Fully synthethic 5w40 oil.
So as oil coolers lines and sump have been meticulously clean seemed like a good time to try a different oil as can find nothing wrong with the set up on my car!
So Millers 5 w40 cfs nanodrive race in it now and currently waiting on a sohn adaptor so can still inject oil but replace with 2 stroke so i dont squirt fully synthethic in.

hopefully my engine oil is the cause Synionic is 10w30 is what i was using and this stuff is supposed to be mega again use in time attack etc but perhaps the 30 too light.

I noticed a slight oil weep from behind flywheel on removal from donor flywheel etc all removed and as i had a spare stat bearing with new oil seal from the first rebuilt engine i have installed that so need todo some running in which weather permitting can happen soon.

anyways its alive again hopefully no more bearing failures but this engine rebuilt 1800 miles ago and cheapo rebuild from a rebuilder with not the best rep so again a test mule...its strret ported so should have some go.

being Jan were are pretty much well ahead of schedule for the track day season so i can concentrate on my Fd as needs some tlc as always.

Still in the back of my mind to sell all the rotaries and get summit else but nothing else takes my fancy so carry on rotoring im a mad fool lol.

Hello there. 1 question i have.
How fuel lines goes. One way or with reverse to the tank.and what kind of fuel pump is on the car. Inside the tank or outside.
If outside do you regulate it with manual fuel pressure valve control.
Im asking cause wankel engines needs accurate fuel pressurw to work corectly.

Hi mate ive utilised the rx8 fuel pot with internal 4 bar regulator, albeit lowered into foam foam filled tank. What i have done though is bypass the internal filter as they get very dirty and constrict the pump...Ive added a pressure gauge and systec fuel filter at engine .

ideally id like a redesign with lift pump and return and run an fpr but ok atmo.

who have thought a fuel filter inside pot..... ive teed the lines so in the circuit but a bypass.

Rx7 FD rear oil pressure regulator is already in so 100psi WOT oil pressure is fine....this new engine cost me nothing but time so hopefully fullysyn looks after the bearings.
