Length of monitor cable

Morning guys,

Any of you techy types tell me what the the maximum practical length of cable i can use to drive my projector before I get signal degredation.

Thanks in advance

John

We put a lot of projectors into schools and 22-30m vga cables aren't uncommon.

Should be not problem with good quality cable.

I've got a 15m cable at home from PC to LCD telly and don't see any noticable difference in quality.

Also invloved in putting IT into schools, as already stated the major factor will be the quality of the cable, use cheap cable and you will get degredation on even a short length. Are you looking to project presentations and the like or Tv/video?

Yep, if you use decent cable you should be ok, and it wont make any noticeable difference. We have huge lengths of cable run in lecture theatres here (from the lectern to the back of the room) and it doesnt seem to make too much difference to the picture quality.

On the same note - can you sent a video signal down Cat 5 cabling to an LCD TV?

Not a brilliant idea as networking cable is twisted pair and due to this is not fully sheilded like video signal cables are. It would work no doubt, but you would likely get interference.

Not directly as twisted pair is not the right impedance for video, you will get ghosting etc. You can buy interfaces (essentialy an active balun) to do this, though for high bandwidth video like VGA they probably aren't cheap.

Bugger - I put some Cat 5 in when I had the wiring re-done - looks like I wasted my time on that one.
