R1 powered cooling questions
Ciaran - 23/5/17 at 07:09 PM

Recently bought a full built R1 equipped car
When driving the coolent temp varies between 70 and 95 degrees dependant on load.

Basically the system doesn't have a thermostat fitted so looking to fit one.

What is the ideal operating temperature?
Is the thermostat fitted inline?
Is it fitted on the supply to the radiator or return?

Anything else I need to consider?

Which R1 engine?

Thermostats go in the outlet from the engine to the top of rad 99% of times.

If it's a early R1 the thermostat is fitted where the two pipes exit the head between the plug holes

That is a early R1 thermostat unit, although I've modified it to take AN pipework and added the temp senders

So there is no thermostat in that housing?

Ref pics, upload them into your archive on here, then copy and paste the forum code

Judging by the temperature fluctuations I would say there isn't one or it's not working.
If I split the thermostat housing is there any seals I might need?

The thermostat sits in a rubber seal, which then gets sandwiched between the housings to seal it.

Pretty sure a stat and seal are knocking on £50
