MT82 gearbox

Just looking at options for a rwd gearbox for my 1.7 puma engine to possibly replace the stock Type 9 I have.

So, the obvious choice to fix the 1st gear is the BGH/Quaife/SPC Tracsport/First Motion etc. long 1st or helical close ratio but these are £1k+ (more like £1.75k for the close ratio).

The next alternative is the RX8 box that is popular at the moment with the classic ford boys but 1st gear is actually even shorter than the type 9 (3.76) and 2nd is pretty long (2.27) therefore ditching the use of first gear and only using 2-6 doe snot really work.

So, I came across the MT82 box (evolution of the MT75) as fitted to the TDCI defender and transit and the ratios look pretty good on this (similar to the BGH E6 but with a better (longer) 5th) -

1st ...5.44
2nd ...2.84
3rd ...1.72
4th ...1.22
5th ...1.00
6th ...0.79

And not using 1st would still leave a respectable 2nd to pull away with.

Has anyone looked at the size comparison with the Type 9, and whether this gearbox will take higher revs (obviously the TDCi will rev to just under 5k and my engine may end up revving to 8k). I know it has an integral bell housing so will need an adaptor plate. Any other comments on this box welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Is 5.44 a typo on 1st?

Otherwise, as you say the 2-6th ratios look very good - interested in this as I am also looking for something other than the std t9 I have in right now.

[edit] Crickey does look like a fat fecker though!

5.44 is NOT a type - used for going up the north face of the Eiger I think!

You also spotted my potential issue - looks pretty beefy compared to the Type 9/RX8 box and also looks like the gear stick is pretty far forward.

The BMW e46 3 series 6 speed boxes again look interesting and have similar ratios to the Tracsport helical from SPC again disregarding the 1st gear, I think this is a Getrag box -

(4.35), 2.5 , 1.66, 1.23, 1.00, 0.85 - http://www.bokchoys.com/differential/GearRatios.htm

example - 2011 BMW 3 SERIES E90 330d 6 SPEED MANUAL GEARBOX 23007582711

or if you want a goggle look at the price of the ZF s5-18 close ratio box often badged as a Type 9 replacement :-)

RX8 5 speed is better than the 6 speed

I think I have to agree but still not a whole lot better than the Type 9 -

RX8 5 and 6 speed

1st 3.483 3.760
2nd 2.015 2.269
3rd 1.484 1.645
4th 1.000 1.187
5th 0.762 1.000
6th – 0.843

Mk1/2 Mx5 5 speed is again not bad but then you have to sort out the clutch etc. whereas the RX8 has the same spline as the Fords.

3.13 1.833 1.303 1.00 .814
