Water expansion bottle
Flamez - 29/12/10 at 09:21 AM

I am currently running a zx10r engine with a yamaha r1 radiator. I have the overflow from the rad neck running to waste. Do others use an expansion bottle? Or like wise run to waste?

You got that engine in yet Phil ?

Yes, use an expansion bottle with a breather. When cold, the bottle should be half full, and the hose to the system from the bottle should be at the highest point to collect the air.

with an expansion system its not got to be at the highest point if you've got a header tank on the radiator.

Yep engine in, just need to refit the loom and cooling system, I'll have. Crack tomorrow. You got me thinking about the exhaust too Jason after seeing your set up very nice. It would be good to know what noise you are running at though.

All i can say on the noise front is firkin loud !!, one of the benefits of having the can 3 feet from your ear on the drivers side. It made 146.2 bhp at the wheels on the rolling road using the titanium bike manifold and standard airbox ( with a power commander ). Dont know how that compares with the aftermarket manifold and airbox ?.

Good point, though i because i dont have a header tank i assume that no-one else does either!

If the system is designed to "suck back" through the rad cap when it cools, then yes, run a hose into a bottle that will catch the fluid, and as it cools it will suck it back. It should also bleed any air too.
The catch bottle needs to be vented, and the hose run to the bottom, and a few inches of rad fluid when set up.

However, if the system does not allow suckback, leave it to find its own level.

On my R1 engined MAC i do have an expansion bottle, the car was factory built.

Get an expansion bottle. I have just installed mine as I was having to top up coolant before almost every run. Now, no longer an issue!
