tdi tintop tyre time..
ned - 18/3/08 at 10:45 AM

It's coming round to that time again, just wondered if anyone had any recent recommendations or 'avoid like the plague' suggestions.

Currently looking at:
Dunlop SP Sport 2000E 205/55 R16 V (91) £47.89
Continental Sport Contact 2 (Mercedes) 205/55 R16 H (91) £55.24
Toyo Proxes T1-R 205/55 R16 W (91) £56.13
Falken Ziex ZE 512 with rim protection 205/55 R16 91V £48.00
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 205/55 R16 W (91) £54.98

Dunlops seem cheap, had falkens before and they were ok. had toyos which were well grippy but wore a bit quicker and always fancied some conti sports as heard good things about them. goodyears seemed good value but not bothered about them either way.

comments?

Ned.

I've got Dunlop Sport Max on my TDi (Leon). Really happy with them.

But at £68 a tyre from mytyres might be a little more than you wanted to spend.

I've had a set of the budget Vredestein's on my car for the last year or so, much better than the Toyo's, Avon's and Michelin's I've had before

(I'm limited to the budget ranges from all makes as I need 145/70 R13 for my crapy tin top)

the better Vredestein's always seam to score highly in back to back tests (like the autoexpress ones - see link)

I've long had the opinion that Continentals are a really good tyre

I have run Continental Sport Contact 2 on passat TDI and had no problem with them and lasted > 20,000 miles a year driven enthusically ( though would estimate 1/2 o motorway miles ).

Good Year Eagle F1s came out on top of the recent tyre test of evo magazine, so shouldn't be a bad tyre, but I have no personal experience with them.

I got eagle NCT5's on my Audi 1.9TDI and they are great, good handling and hard wearing. The F1's will not do as many miles, but it depends on you driving style to which are best

The F1s won the Autocar test too. I had them on my 968 CS and found them to be excellent. Grippy, progressive and good in the wet. Wear rate seemed very reasonable too.

second vote for Goodyear NCT5s good alround tyre - last paid £35 for 195 65 15.

Personally I avoid like the plague dunlops as anybody i know whos had them has had a blow out

I have had very good experience of both goodyear eagle f1's & toyo proxie T1R's & S's and for the price difference couldnt justify the goodyears over the toyos unless i got special discount off them

At those prices I'd snap up the goodyears as they last slightly longer than the toyos with just as much grip and lack of road noise

My expeinece was in a 1998 petrol vauxhall vectra SRi 140 btw
