Poorly engine. ZX10R

I decided to winterise the car today for storage and filled up with antifreeze. With the engine running I topped up while the water circulated. I was a bit perplexed by the amount of fluid the engine took and stopped to see if there were any significant leaks. None were found so I continued to fill up.

At this stage the engine was running smoothly on tick over and temp was about 107 degrees.

Imagine my surprise when a fountain of emulsified oil fired out of the oil breather, it was like a chocolate fountain.

I quickly shut off there was no mechanical sounding death throes.

I dropped the oil and remaining water and the sump was full of emulsified oil and water.

Now what to do, what is the fault? Blown cylinder head gasket?

I guess it's an engine strip down. Do you think its repairable or a new engine?

if its a new engine thats needed i no where there is one going for the right money

Sounds strange to me. Has it overheated at any point? What was the temperature of the coolant you were adding whilst it was running, and was it hot when you added it?

You might get away with flushing it with a flushing oil, then adding a high quality oil, running it up the road for 100 miles or so, changing it then storing it again.

I dont know that particular engine, but on many bike motors a failed water pump seal can result in coolant in the oil.

Worth checking 1st.

sounds like the most fortuitous timing in the world.

I'd guess headgasket, but I know nothing of these engines.

Has it got a water to oil cooler like the ZX9? might be worth checking thats not passing betwen the two.

A quick compression test should show if it's a blown gasket.

yep, zx10r has a water / oil heat exchanger so could be that

Yep ihave spoken to mark and Colin and they suggest oil cooler and water pump first as they are the most likely.

I'll star next week and keep all informed.

UPDATE

After speaking with Mark and Colin, we determined that water was leaking into the oil via either the oil cooler or water pump.

The oil cooler seems pretty bomb proof, just a waterproof jacket really, I did a quick pressure test using a foot pump on the water inlet and outlet, no apparent leak.

I then turned my attention to the water pump. The workshop manual was all but useless as it doesn't show an exploded diagram of the pump. After removal I inspected the o ring that seals with the engine block and all was ok. Next the pump has an internal shaft gasket again this seemed ok. However it became obvious that here should also be a gasket, gland on the engine side of the shaft. This was missing and after a quick Heath Robinson test under the tap this seemed to be where the leak was...

A quick phone call to Fowlers for a service kit for the water pump only to be told it was not serviceable and a complete unit was all that could be ordered at £150 plus vat.

eBay being a best friend at times like this came up trumps, a full pump complete with all gaskets at £23

Whilst waiting for the postie I have removed the sump to check for debris. None found but the bits could have hopefully drained out with the flush.

I'll update once the pump is refitted and the engine reinstalled. If it's not the water pump then I guess I'll have to turn to the cyl head. Although doubt it's this as the engine runs fine and smooth.

Well finally Sussed it, it is fooked.... There is a crack running along the height of cyl 1 behind the timing chain, calls for a replacement engine me thinks....
