MX-5 gearbox
What's the gearbox in the mazda mx-5, and has anyone used it either with the donor engine or with duratec/zetec?
Beats me why this doesn't come up more, mazda/ford engines being often interchangeable as they are. I know mnr do a mx-5 based car but
haven't noticed anyone else going wit it.

Not that i know of, but apparently the mazda 6 speed fits straight on to the duratec.

Mazda 5 or 6 speed mount up to the Duratec as its a Mazda design unit.
They do not fit zetec's. Yamaha designed but Ford manufatured with corporate mountings.

There's me and Keith Tanner as well.
I used the 5 speed gearbox on the 1.6 litre Mazda engine.

The early 5-speed will not fit the Duratec. You need the later NC box.
I am using the current NC MX5 2.0L and the matching 5 speed.

What matching 5-speed? Thought only the current 6-speed fitted the MZR/Duratec.
5-speed and previous 6-speed only fitted the B-series (1.6 and 1.8).
The original 5-speed is the Mazda M-series, which was also fitted to most sub 2-litre rwd Mazda cars and vans (but with wider ratios).

For the USA, the engine is the new 16-valve, 2.0 L (120 cu in) MZR I4, producing 166 bhp (124 kW) and 140 ft·lbf (190 N·m) coupled to either a 5-speed
or a 6-speed manual transmission or 158 bhp (118 kW) with the optional 6-speed automatic transmission. A limited slip differential is available with
the 6-speed option. In Australia the 2.0 L (120 cu in) MZR is offered, rated at 118 kW (158 bhp) and 188 N·m (139 ft·lbf) and the 6-speed transmission
and LSD are standard. In Europe, two engines are offered: the 2.0 L (120 cu in) MZR rated at 160 bhp (120 kW) and 188 N·m (139 ft·lbf), coupled to the
6-speed manual transmission; and a new 1.8 L (110 cu in) MZR, rated at 126 bhp (94 kW) and 167 N·m (123 ft·lbf), coupled to the 5-speed manual
transmission.
So yes, it does exist but is not standard for Aus/Nz.

If it's the "old" M-series 5-speed, then yippee!!!!!! 
Shame it doesn't have a separate bellhousing, otherwise that would make the Duratec/MZR a simple swap on to the old 5-speed.

Late to the party here - there's a 5-speed for the NC MX-5 (the 2006 and later model) that uses the same internals as the previous models, but
the case is different. You'll want one of those to mate to your Duratec. The 6-speed has had some problems breaking shift forks in racing. I
haven't heard if it's a problem for street cars, but take it a bit easy on the 3-4 shift just to be sure...

Another 2 penith, the 6 speeder is way heavier than the 5 cog box and not worth the extra cog imo.

So if I decided to Go ahead with the 1.6 engine, will the gearbox match up to the new 2.0L engine and the engine mounts?
