is there a way of identifying what car an engine came out of by the engine number etc?

Normally the first few letters determine the make and im sure there must be some to determine the model.

don't think so tbh, their bought is such huge numbers by the manufactures and usually shared over a range of models. So there'd be not sense in tying stock down like that. If it came with mountings then perhaps that might point the way or model specific components like air filters or hoses etc

offcourse they can and know!
problem is the build year if its to old then i don't think they have their administration up to the level...

now a days you give them an engine number and they tell you which car when produced which chasis numbers and if it had electric mirrors or not...
etc. etc.

The above comments are always meant to be from the above persons perspective.

Yeah, but even though it runs/sounds like a bag of nails, it's still faster than yours!

I might have forgotten where I put all that CF now.... Maybe my pint might remind me!

possibly, depends on the engine.

For example, the Rover V8 had specific ranges of engine codes and numbers that was allocted to different manufacturers and models. (if it is RV8 you are after, I have the info. although it is readily available on the web).

Another one possbily is Kawasaki but not 100% sure.

There may be others but TBH I never really looked.

all modern ford cars have their details on a database. so if you give them an engine number they can trace what car it was put in at factory.

i presume most manufacturers do this, i dont know how long theyve been doing it though...

what kind of engine have you got in mind Alex?

I know that my pinto's number is actually the second half of the VIN on the Granada it came from (it was the original engine, cause pintos never die )
