broken drive shaft
was enjoying my first proper blat this evening along one of Northern Ireland's best coastal roads then BANG!!
I thought I'd been shot lol!!
drive shaft seemingly broken where it meets the reverse box.
am I looking at a wrecked reverse box as well??

I take it you mean propshaft which runs through the centre of the car and not the two driveshafts that go to the wheels?
I'd be more concerned about damage to wires and fuel lines than the reverse box.

Er no not really, wires and fuel lines cheap and easy to repair, reverse box £600 plus. I would be more concerned about why it failed, has it
sheared at the joint or has it come loose? Were you giving it the beans or changing gear or just pootling along?

Your lucky you did not loose your legs. There have been some horror stories about prop shafts going.

big remainder to everyone - fit prop-catchers !!!!!!!!!
as above I'd have thought there would be more damage to the chassis, wiring, brake and fuel lines 
and if a prop ever escapes the tunnel it can make a real mess of your legs 
a few people here have had close calls in the past....
a prop-cathcer at each end could save your legs and will keep the other damage to a minimum 
have you got any pics' of the damage ?
I'd want to check the reverse box for any obvious damage and maybe take lid off for a look - but if there is no obvious damage, the bearings are
smooth, no alarming noises and it still works etc.... then you've propbably got away with it
btw was the propshaft that broke the one between the engine and reverse box or between the reverse box and the diff ??

If it had broken at the front at 100+mph, I don't think he would be out of A&E for another 2 weeks

it was the one between the engine and the reverse box (reverse box end)
after a quick inspection it looks as if the bolts have worked their way loose but I will know better once I get a better look tomorrow
the sides of the tunnel have been plated at that particular point thankfully

You had a lucky escape, I have Allen head cap bolts on mine, all drilled and wirelocked. People say loctite is enough I disagree.

Yeah, i did mine up (axle end) in a but of a rush using an adjustable spanner.... that was 2 years ago.
