I am upgrading my garage lighting soon,can i run 2 X 4ft (30 watt ?) flourescent lights from a single switch or do i need one per fitting ?

Easily. Light switches are typically rated at 5 amps, which is 1200 watts of lighting.

There are also 10a switches. Not a problem.

only need two switches if you want to have one or other or both on.
worth looking at led lighting too

cheers guys,i was worried about phasing ? or whatever it,s called,in my previous place you could only get half the lights to work at one time.

You will be fine all light switches are rated at 10 amp + .you will be fined your lighting will either be a 6 amp or a 10 amp mcb two Flu's
will be fine. try and go for cool white led tubes the light output is great for garage use
