Import Duty Question

I'm planning on importing a Bently from Canada for my business in Aberdeen. My question is "Does anybody know what sort of duty I will have to pay when it lands in Liverpoool? Is it a % of the value?"

Before anybody asks, no I don't need a driver to bring it to Aberdeen; I'll have that pleasure...!

I haven't imported cars, but typically it is the VAT and a 5~10% custom import duty.

Around 25% typically, best thing to do is contact the

Hm customs and excise

Advice on import duty and tax

Please contact your local Customs and Excise Business Advice Centre. You will find the number in the phone directory under "Customs & Excise". Customs & Excise notices and other information are available on the internet.

you can work it out yourself but it's the craziest system ever.

After you pay the duty you can then have to pay VAT on the full ammount and postage...

Just ordered some stuff from Korea, luckily it slipped through customs undetected Not sure you'll be so lucky with a Bently though.

I imported cars from Japan and I was charged 10% import duty on the invoiced value of the car then then 17.5% on the total value. Hope this helps, this was about 6 years ago so not sure if it is still the same.

Best bet is to talk to a shipping agent who deals with shipping cars.

You can lodge an appeal, but they will impound the goods while its sorted.
I guess you can appeal after you pay the duty but wouldn't expect much success.

depending on the actual value of the goods I try to waiver insurance and ask the vendor to mark down the price.

The duty free limits are pathetically low. £22, and £35 if its a gift IIRC

And don't forget the fee the delivery service add on. Parcel force charge £20 for collecting the money and administration costs
