F27 Blackbird Turbo

Hi All

Thought I would introduce myself and say Hi as have been a member on here now for a few weeks. I am an engine management tuner and run a company called 2Bartuning, i mainly specialise in the Japanese market but always find myself working on something weird and wonderful when contracting.

I own a Formula 27 Kit car with a Cbr1100xx fitted, before anyone asks yes an accusump is fitted.

At present the standard Super Blackbird engine produces around 150hp, well..so they say but have not had a chance to put it on my friends dyno yet.

This is fast enough at present without a passenger to 80 mph but after that the car starts to lose its grunt mainly due to the Diff Config being favoured for quicker acceleration. The car at present will do a 120mph at 11k in 6th gear but im looking to change the Diff ratio to take the car up to around 140mph to make sure on the straights at the track I don’t fall back.

In order to gain the extra grunt back I have decided to pop on a turbo. The unit I have favoured is a Td04 from an Impreza. This should enable full boost around 4500rpm if my calculations are correct.

I have designed an air box setup that enables me not to make a massive hole in the bonnet like others have with the busa turbo’s kit cars but fitting the turbo is going to require some cutting of the side trim.

Will be looking to run around 5-6psi of boost, which the stock engine should handle fine with its compression ratio.

I am unsure on the ecu setup that I am going to use at present as I will want to use 4D mapping due to the Individual throttle bodies. The way this works is you map the car against a TPS signal to the lowest boost as possible and then use a map correction when the loads is increased above atmosphere pressure. The reason for having to do it this way is due to the Map input signal not being fast enough or stable enough to get the correct fueling in with ITB’s. The TPS signal is the fastest input which can be used and with ITB you need this especially with a light internal bike engine.

Once you have mapped it in 3d mode using TPS you then increase the pressure and use the 4D axis of Map to compensate for the Pressure tuning for the VE .

Another option which I am considering is fitting a Emanage ulimate piggyback which is very advanced ecu compared to a power commander etc and this would then make the mapping fairly similar as the 3d part of the map ie Tps will already be good from the stock ecu. We shall see how much time I get available as will need a good day to get it up and running on a full standalone due to some not supporting the cbr1100cc trigger Config.

Will be fitting a rising FPR and inline walbro to help with the fueling but I will also be fitting some S2000 injectors as after using a spreadsheet I made for injector hp calculations I don’t think the stock injectors will have enough for 6psi of boost and still be below 90% injector duty.

Here is the current custom airbox that is on the car which houses the stock filter

and here is the new sealed forced induction box which I have had made for me

Some time over the next few days I will be taking apart the td04 turbo to port the wastegate to make sure it will release enough exhaust energy at 11k rpm. After this is complete i will move onto the the production of the manifold, alu intercooler piping, intercooler fitting, fueling and EMS

Stay tuned for more info…….

I *think* I spoke to you down the 'pod about 2years ago when I still had my Blackbird Fury (red). Which since found a new owner, and yet another new owner (who is on here).

Of course I could be getting mixed up with another similar looking (and engined!) car.

Good luck with the turbo kit anyway.

I've got a TD04 sat at home for my 5PW R1

Won't be fitting that for a while though - prob not this year...

Hi

I doubt you spoke to myself as have only owned the car for a short period but the car did make an appearance at SP a couple of time i hear.

BTW if you are using a TD04 11g make sure you Port the wastegate routing from the exhaust inlet as its not the best design and if you dont have any type of fuel cut setup, then 1bar + is going to kill an R1 engine unless spaced properly

Ryan

Thanks

Ryan

Hi,

great write up, I look forward to seeing how you get on! Did you buy you're car from Wolverhampton by chance? I considered one up there before eventually buying my Blackbird engined Fury (mentioned in an earlier post)!

When you get around to updating your system I'd be interested in buying your old air box if it's for sale, my car currently has a horrid foam filter which gets squashed under the bonnet.... less than ideal...

All the best, I look forward to the next installment.

Hi Yes its an Injection model from 1999

Sorry to hear about your car What happened?

Also how did you find it with traction compared to N/A power and what diff setup do you have?

Hi

I brought it from the staffordshire way.

Will let you know about the old air box as i might keep it just incase i dont like the power delivery with the turbo.

Very nice.
Did a double take on the exaust, which seems to be coming out of the "wrong" side of the car?
How is it routed?
Can you elaborate on th wastegate porting and why please?

And of course Hi and welcome

Hi

The old owner who fitted the cbr1100xx decide to fit the exhaust on the offside to stop passengers burning their legs on the exhaust as he had some issues with the old engine. TBH it make life easier for me keeping it tidy on the turbo downpipe system.

It is routed round the back of the engine and then out of the bodywork.

The td04 11g's which are from the suburu impreza are renoud for boost creeping due to a poor exhaust housing design which does not route much exhaust energy to the wastegate port and it favours to flow straight past. At high rpm this causes issues with venting the unwanted energy and i did not want to take the risk of it creeping up past 6psi on my engine. A fuel cut system will be in place on the ecu setup but its not nice hitting it espically at 10k rpm

Here is a picture of the inside now its been ported but it is difficult to show whats been done

Cheers for the info.
I need to do some more research, but I really quite fancy turbo'ing the blade, as I don't want the bother of an engine swap in this car, will leave that for the next one

Blimey, I'm an ex-IMOCer too - had a Rev 2 turbo.

Never handled as sweetly as my old Mk1 though....
