I read on TOL some time ago about using bicycle speedos sucessfully. Driven off either a wheel or propshaft they seem to work fine up to 100 mph.

Does anyone have any actual experience of using one and can you suggest a make/model etc?

I bought one from http://www.thefastone.co.uk. Can't remember the exact make and model but if you order a catalogue it is in there. It is designed to be used on bikes an will read up to 183 mph (i think). To make it SVA legal you wil require it to be lit. They also sell a small light which is designed to light up the display. All for apporx £40

A mate of mine fitted one ( I helped him )
to his first car. It was from Halfords and cost less than £10. It ran on a magnet araldited to the wheel rim with a sensor mounted from the shock bracket and the wire extended with some speaker cable. To calibrate you entered the circumference of the tyre and it was spot on. It ran to something like 99 mph then started again from 1 mph. We lit it by shining a numberplate light at it from the top of the steering column and it passed sva. That was low cost. It might have been a sigma or similar make.

Forgot to mention another one in the MPS motorbike catalogue which has a trip meter datalogger and all the whistles and bells and costs about £30
