ignition setup/timing?

Morning!

Can anyone explain how to go about setting up the distributor position/timing from scratch? It's a Pinto with a Bosch dizzy and Motorcraft ignition module

How do you determine where (rotationally) the dizzy should be?

How do you work out which HT lead goes where?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers - Nick

turn the crank to tdc,cam heart shaped hole should be at bottom, pointer lines up with pop mark, put dizzy in the hole, rotor will turn as it goes down the electrical conection should be away from the block, there is a score on dizzy body, rotor segment with its score mark should line up with mark on dizzy body,no 1 on the cap is normall next to no 1 inlet port

i do it the made up way,

finger in plug hole on #1, feel for compression stroke.
summat down cly felling for tdc on comp stoke.
(dizzy is allready in btw)
spin dizzy till it lines up with a contact, any will do.
call this number one n put lead on, after this firing order is 1342.

Engine should start ok at that then timing can be set up with a light, if the engine struggles to turn over you can bet your a bit advanced on timing, retard it a bit till it turns over ok.

hope this helps, prob confuse you though, takes as long to do as it did to read.

thanks for the info guys, what you've said makes sense so I'll give it a go and see what happens.
