Does anyone know what chassis the first 'new' Beetle was based on? Am I correct that it was a Golf? If so is the running gear identical to a Golf?

Yes it was a golf, I'm sure I saw a blog somewhere where a guy had taken the 4motion system from a golf into a beetle by swapping out the front and rear subframes...
