Speed pick magnet black magic

I had my propshaft rebuilt by Bailey Morris with a new shaft and front UJ great job and service as usual.

I fitted it last week stuck the pick magnet on the shaft and the speedo (Acewell) wasn’t registering speed. So after changing the pickup and the magnet just in case there was still no speed readings at this point I was suck, then just for the sake of trying anything I moved the magnet on to the propshaft counter weight plate and the speedo is now working. I’m sure there’s a simple explanation for this but its beyond me, I’m just glad it works again.

Did you change the direction of the magnet poles when you re-stuck the magnet?

The balance weight will have moved the magnet nearer the pick up. I found with Acewell that
I needed less than 3mm gap for it to work correctly.

I had the gap set less than 3mm when it was on the propshaft

As a side note, I tested the speed pickup and magnet on a whole saw whilst spinning on a drill and it was working fine with well over a 10mm gap

It is best not to have the pickup on the prop shaft at all. The prop spins to fast at high speed to give correct readings and is generally a IVA fail. My friends car failed on exactly that. The examiner accelerated away at the speedo worked up until about 100mph then fluctuated wildly. Put the sensor on the rear drive shafts after the diff.

The car passed its iva in January with the current set up and the eximiner was ok with the speed readings. I'm not sure why the iva examiner would want to test the Speedo at 100mph, he tested up to 70mph and that's all that required for road use.

Maybe your friends Speedo wasn't set upright, I've not had any problems.
