I use to have a timex one but just upgraded to a Garmin 305. It links into google maps and allows you to view route/speed and also race against yourself. You can get them from hantec for about £130ish or if you ring up they do a as new refurb for £110.

Suunto GPS watch

Hey,

A friend of mine has a Suunto watch that has built in GPS. He is able to download all of his routes etc. on to the computer and even plot them against OS maps (Memory Map).

However there are two points:

1. The watch is not particularly compact
2. The GPS takes a lot of power to run relative to the rest of the watch, so he watch needed recharged every couple of days or so if he was using it alot.

That was 2/3 years ago, so might have got more compact and either more efficient or better batteries.

Just a thought

Very pleased with my Garmin 405, but beware it is not waterproof, only splashproof. However, I don't use it for swimming anyway. The Garmin Connect site where your data is loaded to is very nice.

Amazon is the place to get the Garmin, much cheaper than elsewhere and free postage, nearly next day.

You can get loggers for the purpose about the size of a box of matches. Look up qstarz. Strap it on to something so it has the view of the sky. Batteries are li ion so last ages and prob a lot cheaper than the watches. Just no screen to review info at the time but the pc software is very good.
