I'm travelling to Washington/Maryland (Things to do ?)

Ok, I am travelling to work in Maryland for a few days & I will have a day or so free time over a weekend to amuse myself before a Sunday evening flight back to the UK.

Is there anything worth a look ? I am staying Friday evening until Sunday very close to the white house so figured I would take a look at that.

I may have some free time Wednesday & Thursday evening in Maryland depending how my days go.

I have a hire car so can travel if it's not too far.

Cheers

Went a few years ago and stayed with a friend.
Smithsonian is epic and huge, an amazing amount to see, that alone could fill your time and more.
Go see the original declaration of independence, friend worked across the road and had never been in! Real history is amazing, even for a Philistine like me.

Blue crabs are supposed to be the best, we spent an evening in a crab-shack (food!) and certainly good fun.

A weekend will quickly go. But take care where you wander off to, stay on the beaten track was the strong advice I was given.

Been to Washington a good few times & there's loads to do & see.

Park behind the White House is huge, just wander around & see all the war memorials & monuments, wander up to Capitol Hill, go into the (free) Smithsonian museums, see the massive old stars & stripes flag, kinda the done thing. Spend a bit of time just being in DC soaking up the atmosphere - first time I went it kinda surprised me that it us just like you see in films. If you're flying out of Dulles the air & space museum just up the road is a great way to kill a few hours before a flight ogling plane & a space shuttle. There's more air & space in the city too. Just avoid the aquarium, it's shit!

I really want to match up a US trip with a NASCAR weekend at some point.

There is also the Arlington war cemetary if you are into that type of history.

All of those iconic landmarks are within walking distance of your hotel - White House, Washington Monument (the view from the top is pretty awesome), Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. The Smithsonian is an excellent museum - there are at least 3 parts - The Museum Of American History (some would say the smallest building in the World!), Museum of Natural History and the epic Air and Space Museum. The Declaration of Independence is just across the street and the Capitol building dominates the whole park.

The metro is good and Arlington cemetery is only a couple of stops away. There you will find the Tomb of the Unknown soldier with its US Marines on guard, the eternal flame for JFK, the Apollo astronauts and the Marines erecting the flag at the Iwo Jimo Memorial.

There's enough to keep busy!

Ok, sounds like there's plenty to keep me amused, I am flying out from Dulles so that looks like my Sunday morning is sorted too.

Unfortunately I cant prolong my stay, ive never been to the states but maybe I can get back there with the wife & we can spend more than 48 hours looking around.

On my own I'm happy to walk around for hours so it seems like there's lots around the Whitehouse to keep me interested for a day.
