SVA rear lighting requirement

Do you have to have two reversing lights and two fog lights fitted to pass the SVA / be road legal ?

Only I was thinking of keeping things simple by having 1 stop / tail / indicator unit and 1 reversing lamp unit on the left wing and 1 stop / tail / indicator unit and 1 fog lamp unit on the right wing.

hope this sound simple ?

I thought you just needed one fog light (exactly perpendicular to road), and reverse is optional.

If this is NOT the case I got some re-wiring to do!!

And don't forget the illuminating warning lamp for the rear fog.

So reverse lamp is optional, but fog lamp is mandatory ? I guess someone is more likely to drive into you in fog than when you are driving backwards towards them !I am trying to fathom this one out and yes I had forgotten about the reflectors, I think the combined indicator / stop / tail units I have been looking at have a section of reflector as well.

I am almost certain (although I haven't checked the book) that you only need the fog light and reflectors. I used to have a mini without reverse lights although legislation might have changed since then. Certainly you don't need two of each. If you look at many of the small cars on the road at the moment (Ka, Corsa etc) they only have a single fog and a single reverse light. The reflectors are for when you are parked on the roadside with your lights off (which is apparently why you should use parking lights when parked facing the wrong direction).

Yes you need reflectors (one on each side). I've got the cheap ones that are on their own, but they may look better in a rear light unit.

I have a friend with a Caterham on the road who bolts his foglight on every year for the anniversary of its MOT and its off by the time he gets home.

It looks neater but as GMTBH hinted at, who would want to have a back end smash in a locost (but then who drives it int fog?). I'll be keeping mine on.

As far as MOT goes there is NO requirement at all for reversing lights.

Enjoy.
