Volvo V6 MR, auto box to diff connection

Hi All,

You know what it’s like just trying to work out what to build as your first self built car and all your friends and family are expecting you to produce something spectacular. So I have been batting some ideas around and I wanted to know what you thought this:

I would like to make an MR with the Volvo 740 I have, it’s the V6

Can I use the Engine and auto box, get rid of the drive shaft and attach the diff direct to the out put of the auto box, I’m guessing I will need some sort of bosh to absorb any slight misalignments?

No you need a short prop shaft with two joints and a provision to accept plunge

The Douvrin V6 isn't a good choice a Rover K16 is half the weight and can produce the same power without breaking into a sweat.
A Ford Zetec is also a lot lighter and produces ooodles of power.

Also a lot of other Volvo engines are very suitable.

It's a "yoof" thing, too much Playstation

MR is one of the "grades" of car in Gran Tourismo (MR=Mid engine, rear drive).

"Youngsters" assume this is a standard industry lingo

Nooooo..... as British Trident says there are lots of better engines.
The V6 is basically a Renault lump and has all sorts of French quirks like no access to the bottom end other than splitting the crankcases, wet liners etc. etc. and it's big and it's heavy. OK it's a silky smooth engine but so much aggro when it needs some work.
Understand your desire to be different but a bit like the competition winner in PPC mag who's building a diesel Westie....why pick that one? If it's V6 you're after what about a Vauxhall 2.5 lump?

Simplest cheap big lump for mid engined is either a Rover 820 (140 to 194 bhp) Honda/Rover 2.3 (158 bhp (?) , Rover/Honda 2.7 V6 from a Rover 827 170 bhp.

The reason why I wanted to use the V6 is cos I have one already so I basically have no choice in the matter. But it’s the PVR V6 280E, it makes the 2 tone Volvo shift. It’s the same block that’s in the DeLoreon, don’t know if that’s a good boast.

It’s aluminium as fare as I’m aware and I the weight is 150kg, is that good?
Stock it’s 170bhp and the alignment is 90o like a V8 as apposed to 60o like a normal V6.

I thought that MR was an industry term - showing my age.

Why do I need the small prop, is it just to couple it up?

MR is more of BS marketing term....mid-engined cars have the engine behind the driver and it's C of G is forward of the rear axle line.....

Don't get me started on the front-mid BS...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It strikes me that the length of the engine - gearbox - prop - diff will make it very long and not leave a lot of room for the drivers.

There was a Rover V8 engined hill climb car which I used to see using this configuration and it was very long in the drive train department.

Most MR's (I catch on to new technical terms quick me) would use either a transverse FWD (front wheel drive) unit repositioned at the rear or a transaxle - I think they were fitted to renault 25's or some thing which might fit your engine.

I was thinking that, was aking so I could go measure up all the stuff and see how long it is.

Will look out for a 25 gearbox, but Ihave to in on the realy realy cheap.

The V6 Duratec might be a better choice. It is very light for a V6 and mounts transversely with 200bhp on tap.

if you look on ebay for a bonito - it has a r25 engine and box going with it .

the b280e isnt the same as the delorean early b27 - that was crap - the b280e is much better , and can be stretched to 3 litres . turbocharging the two valve heads is the better option if you can find some 4v heads , NA would be fun .

if your looking for easy just find a laguna and mount it transverse .

that said its not going to popular with many people wholl claim the ford v6 is much better !

cut your losses mid mount a t5 engine , and be at the top of your game .

doing what your doing without an r25box will be very difficult .

I like a challange

I would love to just go out and buy a T5 but I dont have any money

I'll go on the hunt for Laguna and 25's. I might also have a shifty under the car with a measuring tape

UN1 bolt straight up to the PRV V6 engines.

look in my album for dimensions

would be nice to have for the yearly le-mans trip, silky smooth. tad heavy though.
you can always upgrade to the Bi-turbo safrane baccara engine if you want realy power.

Well been under the car yesterday and front of the engine to back of the diff is...... 162cm

I was thinking could make a modern-day Lotus Type 47 Europa?

With the transverse mounted gearbox is it noting to make the C of G quite high?

What about something out of an Audi or Saab some use FF (Front Engine - Front Drive) longitudinal mounted gearboxes?

Hi!

I have read (not checked myself) that the Saab gearbox is sitting pretty much under the engine, obviously making the CG ending up pretty high. Audi should be better in that respect.

Another alternative (mentioned above I think) is the UN1 gearbox from Renault (hard to come by though). This box can be put up-side down in order to allow for the engine to sit even further down (this cannot be done with the Audi-box, since you cannot flip the pinion gear(?) on the Audi box.

Since the Volvo engine is shared between Volvo and Renault, one may assume that mating the Volvo engine with Renault transaxle should be pretty straightforward.

Hi all,

Trust you all had a good weekend?

I had to drive from London to Salisbury on Sunday in the beast, and my god its breath taking. The car is not Locost quick but it's like 1800kg and I out ran a New Copper S of the lights, he was less then pleased, to be taken by a 1990 Volvo Wardrobe on wheels.

Anyway, the moral of my story is that the Auto Box and Engine in the FR (Front-mounted Rear-drive) configuration seems to work so well that I might just keep it, for fear of mucking up what makes this car work so well.

I think that a Locost Build might be more then enough to keep that smile on my face and if it needs some more, I can always put the V6 in a Mid build later.

erm , 760 GLE tips the scales at 1450kgs - is it a saloon ?

i bet the mini isnt less than 1200 kgs .

still , if your going front engine it makes it easier , and it has been put in a westfield , altho - youll make better power with a 4 cyl turbo !

I don’t have a 4cly Turbo in stock I'm afraid. I got the weight of the MOT sheet when they weighed it for the breaks, probably well out then.
